Three Men in a Balloon
When Max Anderson. Ben Abruzzo. and Larry Newman
landed at Miserey. France, on August 17,1978, they were
the first men to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a balloon.
The 3,200-mile trip started at Presque Isle, Maine, and lasted
137 hours and 18 minutes. Although the Double Eagle II was
first to successfully complete the trip, it
/as not the first to try. Captain Washington
Harrison Donaldson, piloting the Daily
Graphu with a two-man crew, had
attempted to cross the Atlantic 10S years
earlier. Donaldson left Brooklyn, New
ork, at 9:19 am on October 6,1873 but ran
, a storm and the men baled out at 1.15 pm
New Canaan, Connecticut.

Ask your school officials to
check for lead m drinking
water The solder in most
plumbing systems can be up
to 50% lead. (Although
newer solder is required to
be only 0.2% lead, this does
not assure lead-free water.)
Some drinking fountains also
contain lead-lined cooling
tanks and pipes as well. For
EPA recommendations, see
