Farm Forum
(Continued from Pago A4B)
have many large developments.
These are the people who want the
green, weed free lawns with no
pests around. These are the acres
with so much runoff when we
have lots of rain. Probably most of
these residents are unaware of the
hazards. Sales people want to sell
the products, nursery people want
to make lawns green, etc. so again
it becomes a personal responsibili
ty and property owners should
learn about the pollutants which
are used by their landscapers or
gardeners.

Organic Soil
Conditioner At
Ag Progress
ROCKSPRING (Centre Co.) The Uni
versity Area Joint Authority, manufacturers
of UAJA Compost™, will sponsor an exhibit
at the 2Sth annual Ag Progress Days, held by
Penn Stale’s College of Agricultural Sci
ences, August 17-19.
The Authority’s exhibit will be part of
more than $2O million worth of agricultural
machinery, equipment, supplies, and services
that will be displayed and demonstrated by
nearly 300 commercial and noncommercial
exhibitors during the three-day event.
UAJA Compost™ is a mixture of hardwood
sawdust and high quality biosolids (clean
municipal wastewater sludge). The soil con
ditioner is an economical source of organic
matter, which is excellent for improving poor
soil conditions. UAJA Compost™ can be used
in lawn establishment and maintenance, flow
er beds/perennial gardens, backfill mix for
trees and shrubs, and greenhouse/potting soil
mixes.
Composted biosolids are not currently
recommended for use on home gardens. Df.
Ernest L. Bergman, professor emeritus of
plant nutrition, and Dr. Michael Orzolek, pro
fessor of vegetable crops at Penn State, are
conducting research using UAJA Compost™
to grow cabbage, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and
peppers. These researchers hope to demons
trate that UAJA Compost™ is. a suitable
“organic** soil conditioner and nutrient source
for the production of commercial vegetable
crops. Preliminary results look very
promising.
Representatives from the University Area
Joint Authority and their consultant, GEO
Decisions. Inc. of State College, will be on
hand to answer any questions visitors may
have during the three-day event A demon
stration showing use of UAJA Compost™ for
turf establishment and maintenance will be
included in the general research bus tour.
Compost spreading equipment will be
demonstrated from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. each day.
Free samples of UAJA Compost™ along
with literature describing the many uses of
this excellent product can be obtained at Uni
versity Area’s exhibit located in the Ag Exhi
bit Building on the comer of Main Street and
West 9th Street at Ag Progress Days.
