“This offers us more opportuni
ty to pull the whole county 4-H
program together in one location.
It also presents the opportunity to
bring young people in from urban
areas, elementary schools for in
stance. to put them in touch with
agriculture and with animals, and
where they can leant about the im
portance of agriculture, of animals
and of their by-products.”
Livestock agent Urn Beck fore
sees the expansion as a way for
both members and non-members
of 4-H to get more hands-on ani
mal experience.
• “Members will be better able to
actually work with apimals during
their, meetings; this tuildihg will
give them more actual involve
ment in what they’re learning
about," he noted during the'brief
groundbreaking program. “It’s
also a place for shows, a place for
sales; and a place toencouragd ur
ban members to become familiar
with the care and use of animals.

“We have a long way to go yet
and will need a lot of help and
hands-on assistance from 4-H’ers,
parents, and supporters,” says 4-H
leader Tom Frimtz, who is chair
ing the expansion committee.
Fund-raising for the expansion
project continued through the
weeklong 4-H Fair, highlighted by
a Kiss The Pig election which add
ed some $2OO to the drive. Each
penny of contribution earned a
vote, with “candidates” campaign
ing • and contributing - for their
opponents. Nominated as pig
smoochers were Rep. Mike
Waugh, .County Commissioner
George Trout, contractor Bob
Kinsley.'and a collective-team of
five 4-H leaden.
In the final tally, 4-H’cn had
pushed the pennies to put their
leaders at the top of the pig-kiss
ing election. Their efforts paid off
as the leader team, headed by
county extension director end 4-H
coordinator Roxanne Price, lined
up to smooch .with 40-pound Zcl
daj'fron Wilson Yorkshires, New
Freedom.
