Dairy Shrine Announces 1993 Student Recognition SHAWANO, Wis. Scott Ru by, San Luis Obispo. Calif., has been selected as the fust place winner in the 1993 Dairy Shrine Student Recognition Contest Ruby, a recent graduate of the California Polytechnic State Uni versity, is to receive a cash award of $l,OOO at the Daity Shrine awards banquet in Madison, Wis. Sept. 29, in conjunction with World Dairy Expo. Second through sixth place winners are also to be honored at the banquet They are: second-Pa tricia Hurtgen, Oakdale, Calif.; third-Matthew Wanner, Narvon, Pa.; fourth-Beth Armbruster, Ea gle, Wis.; fifth-Jill Marti, Sleepy Eye, Minn.; and sixth-Todd Riggs, Evansville, Ind. They will receive cash awards of $3OO, $4OO, $3OO, $2OO and $lOO, re spectively. The student recognition award program is held annually to recog nize graduating seniors who have career plans related to dairy-pro duction agriculture. Winners are selected by an anonymous panel of judges based on leadership skills, academic ability and inter est in dairy cattle. First place winner Scott Ruby was a member of the Cal Poly dairy cattle judging team, treasur er of the dairy club, and was on the dean’s and president’s lists. He was also selected as a National Holstein Distinguished Junior Member and the Oregon State FFA president. He is currently employed at World-Wide Sires, Hanford, Calif., as a marketing as sistant. She served as Dairy Club president, was a member of Alpha Zeta, and was awarded the American Dairy Science Associa tion Outstanding Scholastic & Leadership Achievement Award. She was also on the National Hol stein Association Junior Advisory Committee, was named a National Distinguished Junior Holstein Member and served as president of the California Junior Holstein Association. Hurtgen plans to pur sue a master’s degree in dairy cat tle genetics and reproduction. Third place winner Matthew Wanner of Narvon graduated from Penn State with a degree in dairy and animal science and a minor in international agriculture. At Penn State, he was a member of the dairy cattle judging team, College of Ag Sciences Student Council and the Coaly Agricultural Activi ties Honorary Society. He was also named a National Distin guished Junior Holstein Member, was president of the Pennsylvania Junior Holstein Association and a member of the National Cham pion 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl team. His future plans include pursuing a master’s degree in dairy cattle breeding and, eventually, return ing to his home farm. Fourth place winner Beth Arm bruster recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with a degree in agricul tural economics and agricultural journalism. While in college, she was a member of the dairy cattle judging team, vice president of the Badger Dairy Club and Midwest Regional vice president of the American Dairy Science Associa tion. She is active in college activities as a member of the dairy cattle .judging team, president of the Go pher Dairy Club and representa tive to the College of Agriculture Student Board. This past year she spent three months on an intern ship in Australia. Marti has also served five years on the Minne sota Junior Holstein Board of Directors, including serving as its president She is also on the Na tional Junior Holstein Advisory Committee.
