Dr. Paul E. Hand is to retire
from his post as general manager
and secretary of Atlantic Dairy
Cooperative on July 31 but will re
main active as an Atlantic repre
sentative in industry affairs.
Hand. 62. has served as general
manager and secretary of Atlantic
for the past 11 yean. Assuming
his daily duties will be Robert M.
Dever. 49, who currently serves as
assistant general manager and as
sistant secretary.
Hand joined Atlantic’s staff in
1957 as an economist In this posi
tion, he testified at numerous state
and federal milk order hearings on
behalf of the cooperative’s dairy

By 1960. Hand was elected as
sistant secretary by the board of
directon. In 1971, the board fur
ther showed its support of Hand’s
abilities by naming him assistant
general manager. He was appoint
ed general manager and secretary
in 1982, following the retirement
of Dr. James E. Honan.
Throughout his career, Hand
has been recognized as an expert
on milk marketing and pricing is
sues. He served on a number of in
dustry boards, including the Na
tional Milk Producers Federation
(NMPF), the American Dairy Pro-

GM Paul Hand Set To Retire

Hand also has been praised for
his leadership of Atlantic Dairy
Cooperative, which is one of the
nation’s top 10 milk marketing co
operatives.
“Atlantic made much progress
during Paul Hand’s tenure,” said
Robert B. McSparran, a Lancaster
County dairy farmer and president
of the cooperative. “He guided the
successful meiger that formed At
lantic in 1987 and is credited with
the strong financial position the
cooperative enjoys today.”

Visits to Mount vemon, the
Smithsonian Institution, Arlington
National Cemetery, the Jefferson
Memorial and other historic sights
in Washington were included in
the conference. They also visited
Congressman Robert Walker in his
Washington office. The chapter
FFA advisor is Mr. Charles
Kessler.
Saccharin Takes Sweet Win At Erie
WATERFORD (Erie
Co.) A-Jay Farms, owned and
operated by Marion Alsdotf and
sons, of Spartansbutg, recently
took both the premier exhibitor
and breeder banners at the 3Sth
annual Erie County Holstein
Show, held at the Waterford
Fairgrounds.
Judge for the almost 100-animal
show was Credin Comman, of
Carlisle.
The grand champion Holstein of
the show was also the senior
champion, a 5-year-old cow,
Maplesrow Astro Saccharin, a
Paclamar Astronaut daughter out
of Maplesrow Elevation Sweet,
owned by Robert Freyermuth.
The reserve champion was ait
aged cow shown by Christylym
Curtis. The aged cow was Lojun
Triple Threat Honey, sired by
Hanover-Hill Triple Threat-Red.
The junior champion was a sum
mer yearling owned by Crystal
Miller, Hoi-Ary C Merit Teas,
sired by Tesk-Holm Valiant

While expressing appreciation
for Hand’s “valuable contribu
tions” to Atlantic’s growth, Mc-
Sparran said that he and the board
of directors look forward to con
tinued progress under new general
manager and secretary Robert M.
Dever.
“Bob Dever was the obvious
choice of the board," McSparran
said. “He has beat with Atlantic
for more than two decades and has
worked closely with Paul Hand
for the past 10 years.”

Tioga County Fair during the
Junior Livestock Auction on

Dever graduated from Drexel
University in 1965 with a degree
in accounting. He received his
master’s in business administra
tion in 1972 from Temple Univer
sity. He previously was employed
by the USDA Market Administra
tor as an auditor.

New York, New Jersey, Dela
ware, Maryland, Virginia and
West Virginia.
