Aft-Lmctttar Farmlno, Saturday, July 31,1993 THIS WEEK Wl Tsunami. Japanese for “large waves in harbors." is the cor rect term for what most of us erroneously refer to as "tidal waves " On August 8. 1868. an earthquake in Chile created a dramatic tsunami The visiting U S.S Wateree was anchored offshore when the monster wave hit As the crew of 234 clung to their lifelines, the wave (variously reported as 55 to 70 feet high) swept over the ship Then the Wateree rose to the sur face and rode the crest three miles up the coast and two miles inland before being deposited in a desert. Amazingly, all on board survived, but the ship spent the rest of her days in the desert, seeing duty first as a hospital then as a warehouse j~- 1 before finally serving as an artillery target dur mg the Peruvian-Chilean War in 1879.
