David and Lorraine Lauer Sr., and David, Jr., farm 208 acres In Susque
hanna County. They milk 60 Holstein cows that average between 50 and 60
lbs. of milk per day but keep no young stock. They buy close springing
cows and milk them until they are dry and then replace them with other
fresh cows. They milk In a comfort stall barn with a pipeline milker and use
rotational grazing of pasture for summer feed. David said this use of pas
ture saves energy and time for harvesting crops, but you need to fertilize,
clip and take good care of the pasture. The farm has been in the family 25
years.
Brothers Carl and Paul Harvatlne, along with another brother, Anthony,
who works part-time on the farm, have 150 head of Holstelns with 80 to 90
milk cows that average nearly 22,000 lbs. of milk. They live near Elk Mou ntln
Ski Center so the family has been active In a 4-H ski club. Carl and his wife
Nancy have three children: Laura, graduating from Penn State; Dana, a
freshman at Cornell, and David, a sophomore In high school. Paul and
Susan also have three children: Joshua, a freshman at Penn State; Will, a
senior In high school and Kevin In ninth grade. The farm has been in the
