    Contestants Prepare For Poultry Queen

LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.)
Three contestants will vie for the
Pennsylvania and Lancaster Coun
ty Poultry Queen title during the
annual pageant scheduled for
August 6 at the Farm and Home
Center.
The contestants are Mindy Lee
Dulio, Manheim; Heather Lynn
Fox, Lancaster; and Melissa Kay
Stauffer, Ephrata.
Mindy is the 17-year-old
daughter of David and Darlene
Yeager. She will be a senior at
Manheim Central High School and
is attending vo-tech for cosmetolo
gy. At school, Mindy is active in
cheerleading and the junior
achievement program. She com
pleted every available art course
offered by her high school and has
earned an honorable mention in
scholastics.
In her spare time, Mindy enjoys
swimming, roller skating, and
spending time with friends.
Mindy became interested in the
poultry industry because of her
mother, who is employed by Penn
field in the broiler-grower
department.
Heather Lynn Fox Is the
17-year-old daughter of Thomas
and Margaret Fox. In the fall, she
will be a senior at Conestoga Val
ley High School, where she is
active in cheerleading, yearbook
staff. Against Drugs Club, and
Prom Club.
Heather has not decided what
she would like to do after college.
In her spare time. Heather enjoys
spending time with friends, relax-'
ing, and traveling.

Heather’s ties to the poultry
industry are through her job at
Sauder Eggs as a case packer and
through her father who works as a
quality control inspector at
Sauder’s.
Melissa Kay Stauffer is the
18-year-old daughter of Clark and
Lucy Stauffer.
Melissa attends the Lancaster
Campus of Harrisburg Area Com
munity College, where she is
studying business administration.
Melissa had graduated from
Ephrata High School where she
was on the National Honor Socie
ty, a member of the girls’ volley
ball team, and secretary of the
Future Business Leaders of
America.
Melissa helps on her family’s
65-acre farm with its 22,000 broil
ers, 13 acres of produce, and hog
operation. She also works as a
waitress at the Cloister Restaurant.
In her spare time, Melissa enjoys
volleyball, tennis, cooking, and
spending time with friends and
family.
During a recent get-together
with the contestants, current Poul
try Queen Melissa YOder told them
about the duties of the candidates.
These include interviews with
judges, a presentation promoting
poultry products,'and impromptu
questioning during the pageant.
Applicants must have a know
ledge or sincere interest in the
poultry industry, and participate in
parades, banquets, school promo
tions, and Farm Show activities.
This year, the contestant
selected as the Lancaster County
Poultry Queen will also serve as
the Pennsylvania Poultry Queen.
She will receive a $730 scholar
ship or cash. Two alternate queens
will be chosen to assist in poultry
promotions and will receive a

grants from the Pennsylvania
Department of Agriculture total

grant program is to increase

tions at the 4-H Farm and Educa
tional Center on the property of
the Garrett-Williamson Founda

programs conducted from this
location each year, according to
Bud Bryan, Delaware County 4-H
coordinator.
The grants consist of a $2,500
direct grant for educational prog
rams relating to agriculture and a
matching grant of $15,000 for
capital expenditures and equip
ment related to agricultural educa
tion for youth. Volunteers in 4-H
are working hard this year to raise
the necessary funds to match this
grant. No money from tax sources
can be used for the match.

4-H in Delaware County. 4-H
members from throughout Dela
ware County showed Wolff the
animals and poultry they are rais
ing at the farm and discussed some
of the educational programs they
participate in there. Parents and
adult volunteers also had an
opportunity to discuss 4-H prog
rams with the secretary.
Membership in 4-H is open to
any youth age 8 through 19,
regardless of where they live,
race, creed, or handicap. Informa
tion on 4-H can be obtained from
