case of Reverend William Archibald Spooner, an acci
dental slip of the tongue 1 Spooner was warden of New
College. Oxford University, from 1903-1924 One day he was
announcing the hymn "Conquering Kings Their Titles Take”
but instead said. "Kinquermg Kongs Their Titles Take.” and
in one "swell foop” the spoonerism was born. Oxford stu
dents wasted no lime producing their own examples and
attributing them to the warden Luckily. Spooner had a sense
of humor and even added more of his own misspoken expres
sions to the growing collection, which includes It's kistomary
to cuss the bride, half-warmed fish, and blushing crow.

Spooner’s Day
Shrimp Salad
2 cups cleaned, cooked ihrlmp
1 tMipoon finely chopped
onion
3 labletpoone lemon juice
2 cups diced celery
1/3 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup chili sauce
lettuce
2 hard-boiled eggs
Combine all ingredients
except lettuce and eggs,
and chill well Serve on
beds of lettuce garnished
with sliced hard-boiled eggs
