Flintstone Brontosaurus burger?
How about a Martin’s Country
Market giant 30-gallon ice cream
sundae, complete with syrup and
cherries.
Well Fred Flintstone wasn’t
around last Friday afternoon when
Martin’s, located in Ephrata,
unveiled this “dino-sized” delect
able in the store, but more than 500
shoppers stopped by for a share of
(he treat.
ADC Names Bower
SOUTHAMPTON (Bucks Co.)
Logan Bower of Blain, Pa.,
received a pleasant birthday sur
prise on June 18 when he was
named Atlantic Dairy Coopera
tive’s Outstanding Young
Copperator.
Bower, 33, competed against
eight contestants during the 23rd
annual Pennmarva Young
Cooperator Contest to win the
title. The contest was held June
17-18 at the Turf Valley Hotel and
Country Club in Ellicott City, Md.
Bower grew up on his family’s
dairy farm in Perry County. On
Feb. 1 of this year, he began leas
ing the farm from his parents. He
milks 10S Holsteins and farms
400 acres. He raises an additional
10S head of young stock and
grows com, alfalfa, oats and
barley.

The huge sundae was the
brainchild of Hershey Foods and
the Lancaster County Dairy Asso
ciation’s "I scream, you scream,”
ice cream promotion.
It all started when Hershey
called Martinis assistant grocery
manager Vickie Firestone and
asked if they wanted to build the
sundae. Firestone, who is very
promotion-conscious jumped at
the opportunity.
“I like doing stuff like that,”
Firestone said. “I like displays and
doing things with the public.”
So with Hershey providing syr
up, cherries and the mini swim
ming pool to build the sweet
mountain in, Breyers came

Bower graduated from Penn
State University in 1982 with a
bachelor’s degree in dairy science.
He is president of both his Atlantic
local and the Perry County Far
mer’s Association. He is also an
advisor for the Pennsylvania
Junior Holstein Association and a
member of the Pennsylvania
Dairymen’s Association. He rep
resented Atlantic’s District 18 in
the Young Cooperator contest.
In addition to the Outstanding
Young Cooperator, four runners
'up were named. They are Evan J.
and Lori A. Burkholder of Fayet
teville, District IS, second place;
James E. and Debra Krantz of
Quarryville. District 12, third

A mass of Friday shoppers
waited patiently licking their lips
in anticipation of this cool treat on
a hot June day. Firestone said they
would hand out free dishes of ice
cream until it was gone and SOO
dishes later, it was.
“If we did this before, this is the
first time in a long time,” Firestone
said, seemingly quite pleased with
the response.
A dish of scrumptious ice cream
probably wasn’t on the grocery list
of shoppers Friday but that didn’t
stop most from finding a little
room in their “bread basket”
anyway.

3 in New Orleans, La. The Krant
zes, Bechtels and Thomans are to
attend the National Institute on
Cooperative Education July 26-29
in Cincinnati, Ohio.
