New Jersey’s annual celebra
tion of organic food and farming/
gardening sponsored by the
Northeast Organic Farming
Association/New Jersey (NOFA/
NJ) will take place this year on
September 18 at the Stony Brook-
Millstone Watershed Association
Reserve in Pennington, NJ.

mer for 33 years and author of
“Farms of Tomorrow: Communi
ty Supported Farms, Farm-
Supported Communities,” will
talk about the important role of the
consumer in shaping tomorrow’s
agriculture,
More than 45 seminars, demon
strations, and tours will run
throughout the day. Classes for the
farmer/gardener will cover such
topics as an introduction to organ
ic growing, edible landscaping,
urban/container gardening, lawn
care, permaculture, and growing
cover crops. Demonstrations
include beekeeping, composting,
threshing grain, starling a worm
box, aquaculture methods, and

Organic garden doctors will be
on hand to diagnose garden prob
lems. Farm/garden supplies such
as topsoil/potting soil, fertilizers,
farm tools, composting equip
ment, and pest control products
will be available for sale. Farm/
garden supplies and equipment
will be auctioned in the afternoon.
Fairgoers will be able to sample
and buy locally grown organic
foods and talk to New Jersey
organic farmers. Among the many
treats for the palate will be whole
wheal bagels with fruit jams,
whole wheat pizza, corn on the
cob with herbed butter, fresh
peach short cakes, vegetable ra
touille with fennel and masala,
and much more.
For those interested in a day in
the country, farm craft demonstra
tions include basket making, dried
flowers, handcrafted brooms,
woodtuming, pottery, log furni
ture, dyeing and spinning. Enter
tainment will include something
for all ages: storytelling, live mus-

devoted to organic farm certifica
tion in New Jersey, certifying food
as “organic” in accordance with
established standards. NOFA/NJ
also develops education and mark
eting programs for organic far
mers in the stale.
Admission to the Fair is $4 for
adults, $1 for children 3-15, and
free under three. Volunteers for
the fair are admitted free of
charge. Volunteers are needed for
mailings, baking, distributing
fliers, making signs, and more.
