McCormick’s Reaper
On June 21, 1834, Cyrus McCormick patented the first prac
tical reaper Cyrus built the machine, which his father
Robert invented, m a log cabin blacksmith shop on his
father’s Virginia farm Although it was practical, it was not at
all popular When young McCormick attempted to demon
strate the reaper in a neighboring field, the
neighbor stopped the demonstration, fearing
that the machine would rattle the heads off
his wheat The reaper finally did cut six acres
of wheal in half a day as much as six men
m another neighbor's field, but farmers were
leery ol the newfangled device McCormick
SiMaileventually sold two reapers in 1841, but the
' " machine, which ultimately changed
American agriculture, didn't really catch on until the 1850 s
It's the farmer’s care that makes the field hear.

peas. Tie heads closed svith string and
place on rack over boiling water.
Cover and steam until peas are ten
der, about 30 minutes When done,
remove string and drizzle with melted
butter Makes 4 servings.
