It is also expensive to hang onto non-breeders too long. How long is too long? That's difficult to answer because there are so many variables. A repeat breeder becomes expensive when; 1.) her production drops and she keeps a better, more profitable cow out of her stall, 2.) her health and breeding costs escalate, 3.) she remains dry too long, gets fat and runs the risk of having calving-related problems next lactation, 4.) she calves in the heat of the summer, or S.) her calving time gets pushed out of the base-building period. If you are trying to maintain a milk base, it may be wise to have cows calve throughout the year rather than having a seasonal herd. When one group of cows move out of the base-building period because of longer calving intervals, another group with similar calving intervals can slide into the base-building slot.
