Reverend Henrv Ward Beecher and wife ot Calvin bills
Stowe, a theological seminary prolessor But she is best
remembered as the author ot the anlislaverv novel Untie
Tom s Cnhm. The tuior surrounding the book s publication
in 1852 resulted in unparalleled popularity (it was lianslaled
into at least 23 languages) and ciealed a prolound political
impact so much so that it can rightly be counted among
the contributing causes to the Civil War President Lincoln
acknowledged this when he met Mrs Stowe during the war
