The Chester County DHIA Board of Directors is in the process of developing a Policy
Book for the association that will encompass all the policies that have been adopted over
the last six years. This book will serve as a guide to both the technicians and the board
so that all procedures and operations are standardized for the members, technicians and
the board. The Board intends to review the policies before publishing the book to see
what new policies need to be adopted and/or which current policies are out of date and
need to be deleted. PA DHIA has an extensive list of rules and procedures that govern
the testing of herds; therefore, this county book will deal with the management of the
local association covering such items as payroll, vacations, new herd assignments, etc,
If Chester County DHIA members have any suggestions for new policies, the Board
would welcome their input. Contact the local DHIA director or call President Dan
Miller. (869-2604)
In other news from the Board, the directors are reviewing a proposed agreement
between independent counties, such as Chester County, and PA DHIA. This agreement
spells out the procedure for a working relation between the state organization and
counties that have elected to remain independent and continue to control their own
finances and 1 hire and direct their own technicians. They are also planning to invite the
technicians to more board meetings beginning in June to solicit their suggestions to
improve the association and to develop a plan to expand the DHIA program to more
herds in the county.
The Dairy Promotion Committee in Chester County has already embarked on another
ambitious program for 1993. Over the years, the county has been very active in
promoting dairy products through a wide-range of programs and 1993 is no exception
The heart of fund raising is focused on the "Dairy Wagon", a trailer from which
members of the dairy community sell milk, ice cream and milk shakes at events from
March to October. In some cases, organizations rent the "Wagon" from the committee

and sell the dairy products themselves to raise funds for their projects. Be sure to
patronize the "Dairy Wagon” at such events as Kimberton Fair, Cochranville Carnival,
Rough & Tumble and Unionville Fair, just to mention a few of the current 16 bookings.
The committee is always in need of help, so dairy families should seriously consider
promoting your own product by working in the "Dairy Wagon" this summer. Contact
committee chairman, Vera Rohrer (717-529-2803), if you can spare a few hours for a
worthwhile cause.
The funds that are raised are used to support the Dairy Princess Program which has
been very well conducted in 1992 by Dairy Princess Noel Scheib and Dairy Maid Sarah
Laffey. They have presented numerous programs promoting dairy products at schools,
supermarket?, fairs, etc. On May 29th, a new Dairy Princess was crowned at the annual
pageant at Herr's Foods, Nottingham. Congratulations to the 1993 Princess Theresa
Inhof, Phoenixville and Dairy Maids Johanna Landis, Karen Inhoff and Sarah Laffey.
Another promotion is the giving of baby baskets with dairy products to the first babies
bom in Phoenixville, Brandywine and Chester County Hospitals on June Ist to promote
June as Dairy Month.
Other means of promoting the dairy industry are being considered by the committee,
such as dairy farm school tours and newpaper advertisements, depending on the
availability of funds. The dairy farm families that make this program successful should
be commended for the all the time and effort they put in each year. Join the program
and have a good time working with your neighbors and promoting dairy products.
