Casey at the Bat
Ernest Lawrence Thayer was paid five dollars for his final
column in the San Francisco Examiner "Casey" appeared
under the pen name "Phin" in the Sunday edition. June 3,
1888. and no one. least of all Thayer, ever dreamt that it
would he remembered and recited more than a hundred
years later. The ballad did not create a stir until later that
summer when comedian William DeWolf Hopper
recited it at Wallach's Theater in New
York. The New York Times reported that

X cup vinegar
K cup sugar
1 egg batten

1 apple cored, and chopped
X cup aour cream
Combine cabbage and cel
ery. Mix mustard with I
tablespoon vinegar. Heat
remaining vinegar to boil
ing; stir in mustard, sugar,
egg. salt, and pepper. Cook
over low heat, stirring, until
thick. Pour hot sauce over
cabbage, mix well, and chill.
Mix in apple and sour cream
just before serving.
