Lebanon To Hold Pageant May 29
LEBANON (Lebanon Co.)
The Lebanon County Dairy Prin
cess will be crowned Saturday,
May 29. This year’s pageant will
once again be held at the Lebanon
Vo-Tech School. The festivities
are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

HAPPENINGS
4-H Horse Club
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held May 16 at the
Lebanon Area Fairgrounds. After several years of plan
ning, the youth members, adult volunteer leaders, and
parents of the Lebanon County 4-H horse and pony clubs
have completed building a second horse ring at the Leba
non Area Fairgrounds.
It is a dream come true for the 4-H children. The ring is
ISO feet x 300 feet with a stonedust surface. Many area
businesses have donated their time and materials to com
plete the project
The 4-H members, adult volunteer leaders, and parents
have sold hamboats, held bake sales, and donated many
hours of hard labor to complete the new show ring. With
monetary donations, the 4-H Horse Clubs have purchased
new equipment for jumps and western game classes.
The 4-H district horse show will be held in Lebanon
County at the new facility on August 28. After placing in
their county roundup, competitors will compete at the dis
trict level for a chance to advance to the state competilon
in Harrisburg at the Farm Show Complex in late October.

Capitol Days
Dauphin County 4-H members and leaders Ayanna
Inman, Shared Ministry 4-H Club, Mrs. LaVema J. Foun
tain, director of U.S. Senator Harris Wofford’s central
Pennsylvania Office, Valerie Bingaman, Shared Ministry
4-H Club, Matthew Wagner, 4-H Clover Leaves, and
Helen C. Riley, extension agent met and visited with the
Honorable Ronald I. Buxton, House Representative (Dis
trict 103) and the Honorable Ronald S. Marsico, House
Representative (District 10S) at the 4-H Capitol Days held
recently at the Harrisburg Hotel in Harrisburg.
In addition, to meeting with their legislators at the legi
slative breakfast and a private visit in their offices, 4-H
members and leaders visited other governmental depart
ments and state agencies, as well as toured the Capitol
Building. We also had a chance to meet with Catherine
Baker Knolls, Pennsylvania treasurer and Gene R. Ste
phenson, deputy treasurer II at the Treasury Department.
Pennsylvania 4-H Capitol Days is conducted for the
purpose of providing 4-H teen members with an opportun
ity for studying the process of legislation, meeting and
talking with officials of state government, visiting various
facilities of stale government, developing an appreciation
for Pennsylvania’s heritage, relating the 4-H educational
program to government officials, and gainng a belter
understanding of political issues.
Summer Program Assistant
Adams County Cooperative Extension recently
announced that the position of 4-H Summer Program
assistant for the summer of 1993 will be filled by Jayne N.
Hess, daughter of John J. and Bonnie L. Hess.
Jayne began her duties as 4-H summer program assis
tant on May 10 and will continue with extension through
August 6. She will be working with 4-H summer events
such as Regional 4-H Presentation Night, 4-H State
Achievement Days, 4-H Fair, 4-H Fashion Revue, 4-H
Overnight Camp, 4-H Day Camp, and miscellaneous
other local and county 4-H events.
Jayne will be developing and presenting a “Kid’s Com
munity” program, which will be centered on healthy eat
ing habits, physical fitness skills, survival skills, and char
acter values and morals. Jayne will be holding the “Kid’s
Community” program in two separate community areas in
Adams County.
The main focus of this program is to develop a 4-H
program in communities where one does not exist. Jayne
will be promoting her program in several elementary
schools in late May. This program will be geared toward
8-12-ycar-olds and will include educational as well as
recreational activities.
Jayne is attending Penn Stale University, majoring in
agricultural science, and minoring in English writing. She
is a junior planning to graduate in May 1993.
Jayne belonged to the 4-H Dairy Club for 11 years.
While in 4-H, she served as president of the Dairy Club
and vice president of the Adams County 4-H Senate. She
also participated in Citizenship Washington Focus, Pen
nsylvania 4-H Capitol Days, interstate exchange prog
rams, and Penn State 4-H Achievement Days.

Jennifer Bashore is the daught
er of Ricki and Roberta Bashore,
Lebanon. Jen is 17 years old and is
currently a senior at Northern
Lebanon High School. The
Bashore family farm consists of
120 acres, which supports their
herd of 175 Holsteins, 7 of which
are Jen’s. The Bashores moved lo
their current farm six years ago,
and since then Jen has been very
active in 4-H, FFA, and church
activities. She currently is serving
as president of the Norlcbco 4-H
Dairy Club, and vice president of
the Northern Lebanon FFA. Jen is
a member of the Lebanon County
Jr. Holstein Club and the Bashores
are active members of Little Swa
tara Church of the Brethren. Miss
Bashore enjoys a variety of sports
and enjoys working with children.
Her immediate plans are to con
tinue working on the family farm.
Karen Heilinger is the 17-ycar
old daughter of Richard and Jose
phine Heilinger, Newmanstown.
The Heilingers raise Holsteins,
Brown Swiss and Guernsey cattle.
Karen owns a total of 15 head and
spends a lot of time in the show
ring with her Guernseys and
Brown Swiss. She is a member of
both the Brown Swiss and Guern
sey Breeders Associations. Karen
is also active in the Elco Dairy
4-H Club and the Eastern Lebanon
County FFA Chapter, where she is
serving as secretary. Karen and
her family are members of St.
Pauls U.C.C. Church in Millbach.

ley College and major in agricul
ture science.
Stacy Krall and Amy Burkhart
will begin their reigns as Dairy
Maids for Lebanon County. Fol
lowing is a brief introduction to
these young ladies, who will play
an integral role in dairy promotion
during the next year.
Amy Burkhart, Myerstown, is
the 13-year old daughter of Tim
and Kay Burkhart Amy is a mem
ber of the Elco 4-H Dairy Club
and is a member of the band and

farm near Lebanon. Stacy attends
Cedar Crest High School and is
involved in the FFA program
there. She owns three dairy ani
mals of her own. Stacy feels serv
ing as Dairy Maid would be a
good way for her to promote the
