A Dark Day
Imagine a day. like any other, which unexpectedly begins to
darken until it is almost nighttime at noon No storm or
solar eclipse can explain the eerie darkness Many people
believe that doomsday has arrived as chickens roost and can
dles must be lit against the deepening gloom This was the
scene on May 19, 1780, the famous "Dark Day” in New
England, when most of the region was plunged into an early
night, only to have daylight return late in the afternoon. As
with other dark days both m New England and elsewhere, no
verifiable causes have ever been found Although some
researchers suggest the culprits may have been atmospheric
particles from distant forest fires, this has never been proven
and the mystery remains
Every cloud engenders not a storm.

EARTHWISE
Although more than half
this country’s workers live
within biking range (5
miles) of work, few people
consider that option. Some
who try find that their city is
not really “bicycle friendly ”
