A high residue tillage equipment field day will be'held Tuesday, May 2Sth, 1993, at the Jeff Pontius farm, located along Route 147, 3 miles south of Sun bury. The field day is cosponsored by Pontius, the Northumberland County Conservation District, the USDA Soil Conservation and the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Services, and the Penn State Cooperative Extension Service to provide an opportunity for farmers and agency personnel to view and measure the percen tage of crop residue left on the sur face after tillage and planting operations. The procedure for measuring crop residue will be demonstrated. John Deere company, C.B. Hoobcr, and Jeff Pontius will have high residue tillage equipment at the field day. John Deere company will demonstrate their new Mulch Master Tillage tool. C.B. Hoober will demonstrate some of the lat est high residue tillage tools from Krause and DMI companies. Pon tius will use his John Deere no-till drill for planting soybeans in all tillage plots, and prepare other plots with his chisel plow and disk. The field presently has a heavy cover of com stalks. Norman Conrad, Crops and Soils Specialist from Penn State Cooperative Extension will be„on 4 A new AERWAY can be your ticket to INCREASED PROFITS and help you comply to your conservation plan. wt wn m h«d tnwiitid cam *flt »pw) Mmm 4£OOS,OOD grtm <4 (quid mmw pir m Ml lw «Md M k p«- p—hr ■iMgMW.'Wu mn kiMhlpw— il rt lh* dOhnno* whm m UMd ft* AtMfty ari sMdWdngMyimVlMWqpdgMWdwidMad StodftiMMdftlluMiftMgood.lM'ddi'mm mifldttwA«-\Mvk)o>wrfamiM«llia4intl» ground mi W* nh aid mm pmM* MMd of Mining •«.' CAMP HILL, PA. 17011 MOO-UI-MIS hand to present a program and answer questions on management of weeds and insects in high residue tillage systems. The percentage of crop residue left on the soil surface after plant ing may mean the difference of a farmer being in or not being in compliance with his Food Securi ty Act (FSA) conservation plan and being eligible or not eligible for USDA benefits. Crop residue management is a component of more than 95% of all current FSA conservation compliance plans. Crop residue management is the most cost effective single conser vation practice available. Crop residue management is the prac tice of keeping as much as possi ble of the previous crop residue, (com stalks, straw, etc.) on the soil surface before and after the pre sent crop is planted. Benefits of a high residue tillage system are many, including less soil erosion, conserves more moisture, requires less tillage, saves time, requires less labor and improves water quality.” Farmers as well as other holders of a private pesticide certification will receive 1 credit toward certi fication renewal for attending this field day. The PA Department of Agriculture has approved this program as an update training session.
