A New Thing
On May IS, 1940, the excitement that rippled across the
country was almost palpable. It was the dawn of a new age
in women’s wear. Women queued up for hours before the
stores opened that day, just to be sure of getting their share
of the new commodity; nylon stockings. Thanks to public
relations fanfare, exaggerated claims that a pair of stockings
would “last forever,” and limited stock, hosiery departments
were stampeded and near riots broke out. By the end of the
year, three million dozen pairs of stockings made with the
new miracle fiber had been sold. Not only did nylon stockings
change the way women dressed, they changed the language.
Just as silk stockings became obsolete, the term stockings
itself fell into disuse, as women called them simply, “nylons.”
Eat to please thyself, but dress to please others.
