York Selects Cecilia Martin As Dairy Princess JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) Cecilia Martin was crowned the York County Dairy Princess during pageant ceremonies held Satur day, April 25, at the York 4-H Center. The 16-year-old new princess is the daughter of James and Rosine Martin, Spring Grove R 3. She is a sophomore student at Spring Grove Area High School and plans to pursue a degree in ele mentary education. Cecilia is the fifth generation on the Martin family farm and regu larly assists with milking chores for the 90-head herd. The family, including her brother Chris, 18, who served as her pageant escort, also crops 210 acres of land. She is active in school and her church youth group and enjoys horseback riding in her spare time. As part of her pre-coronation interview, Cecilia was asked by pageant emcee York County Commissioner George Trout how she felt about her agriculture background, compared to most of her school peers who are not from farms. Cecilia responded that she is proud of her agriculture heritage and having had to learn to work while she was growing up. “I like being able to come home from school and go outside and enjoy nature,” smiled the new princess later, in a post-pageant interview. An original promotional pre sentation Cecilia gave during the program featured two large, com parative posters. One depicted a healthy athlete who consumed a balanced diet, including lots of Ready for their milk ambassador roles as York Dairy Mis ses are from left, Lisa Jones, Raechel Kilgore and Erin Saturdi 8. 1993 dairy foods, while the other show ed a greenish-complexioned “couch potato” fond of mostly empty-nutrient “junk” foods. As York’s Dairy Princess, Ce cilia says she is especially looking forward to working with elemen tary-age school groups, since she plans a career teaching children. She anticipates having opportuni ties to “introduce a calf’ to stu dents during her upcoming visits to school classrooms. Tanya Thoman and Kelly Jo Myers were both named Dairy Maids during the crowning cere monies. Tanya, 13, is the daughter of Gail and Gary Thoman, Dallas town R 3. She is a seventh-grade student at Dallastown Area Mid dle School, active in school musi cal organizations as well as in 4-H and Junior Holstein dairy clubs. Tanya owns nine head in the fami ly’s Garwill operation, which in cludes 110 cows and 114 acres of cropground. For her promotional presenta tion, Tanya gave a talk on avoid ing osteoporosis, using the poster she designed and titled Mookcy Cow Says Only You Can Prevent Brittle Bones. Kelly Jo Myers, 16, is the daughter of Carolyn and Morrell Myers, Thomasville R 2. A sopho more at Spring Grove Area High School, she is her class secretary and a track team member. Kelly Jo owns two Brown Swiss animals which she exhibits in 4-H. She is a member of the county’s 4-H dairy judging team. The poster created by Kelly Jo for her promotional presentation was based on a popular national dairy slogan and tilled Move Over Cola Because Milk Is America’s Health Kick. Pageant ceremonies also in cluded the naming of three Dairy Miss representatives, Lisa Jones, Erin Marks and Raechel Kilgore. The Dairy Miss and Dairy maid winners will assist the Princess with selected promotional activi ties through the next year. Lisa Jones, 6, is the daughter of Patricia and Dennis Jones, Lis burn Avenue, Shrewsbury. She is a first-grade student at Southern Elementary School and helps to feed calves on the Delta farm of her uncle, Leonard Greek. Erin Marks. 9. is the daughter of Barbara and Melvin Marks, Air ville Rl. A second grader at Clear view Elementary School, Erin’s chores include helping to feed heifers and moving the family’s dairy herd to rotational pasture. Raechel Kilgore, 8, is ihe daughter of Pam and Doug Kil gore, Airville R 2. Raechel attends second grade at Clearvicw Ele mentary School and helps the family with feeding calves and oc casionally with milking chores. Outgoing princess Shannon Doll, Glenville, wrapped up her year of representing the York dairy industry with the crowning of her successor. Through her reign, Shannon visited 15 school classrooms, wrote 14 newspaper articles, made 4 radio presenta tions, took part in numerous store and mall promotions, farm and non-farm meetings, dairy shows, parades and made other'special appearances on behalf of dairy promotion.
