What’s the perfect gift to give your
mom for Mother’s Day?
It’s a printed tribute to your
mother in Lancaster Farming.
Guaranteed.
Maybe you forgot to write your
letter in time to be included in this
Mother’s Day feature. Sorry you
missed it, but you certainly won’t
want to miss reading about other
moms and grandmoms.
Here are the letters written alias
toddlers to retirees. Letters about
wives, moms, grandmoms, great
grandmoms, soon-to-be moms,
and daughters in progress.
Even it you do not know the
women for whom the tributes were
written, you will laugh, cry and
gasp as you read about the mothers
and grandmothers who make the
world go round.
Happy reading on this special
Mother’s Day!
Today, I would like lo honor my
mother Ethel (Midge Summers)
Maitland, my friend. We have
heard many interesting stories
about her growing up with 14
brothers and sisters. What a joy her
family is to us!
I’ms so proud of her concern
and courage that led her to join the
army in World War 11, where as a
sergeant, she met my dad. After the
war, marriage, and some moves,
they settled in a valley in Narvon,
where my sister, two brothers, and
1 grew up. We were a normal fami
ly with good times and some
squabbles, but there is an enduring
memory of always being loved!
Although my mother had a
small hair dressing business, she
was always there for us. Even as
teens and working adults, we
would come home to find her and a
warm supper waiting. There are
many happy memories of trips
with Mother and Dad, especially
camping. They wanted us to enjoy
nature and the simple things of life.
My mother excelled in taking care
of my dad before he died. Her love
and submission were beautiful to
see.
Today, she loves each child,
each in-law, and each grandchild
dearly and intercedes to our'
heavenly Father daily for us. (Yes,
by God’s grace we are all in God’s
family, too). She is unassuming,

Gay Brownlee. My mother.
How can I adequately describe
her? Webster’s defines mother as
being a “female parent” yet my
mother, of necessity, was the male
parent as well. By herself, she
raised, instructed, nurtured, discip
lined, but most of all, loved six
children.
When thinking of my mother, it
is her great love for her family that
stands out Through the very hard
est of limes as a. single parent, that
abiding love gave our family a sec
ure, solid foundation. We always
knew that she would be there for us
no matter what the situation or
problem. The same still holds true
today, although we have reached
adulthood and lead our own lives.
Next to her love, my mother’s
sense of humor is what 1 treasure
most. She has a wonderful capaci-

berly Dawn and son Alton.
My mother was bom May 28,
1910. She lost her mother when
she was two years old. Raised
mostly by a kindly aunt, she work
ed hard, attended Sunday school
and church. She married my dad
on June 20, 1931, right during the
yet well informed about the times
we are living in. A time stands out
that typifies my mother: recently,
as she was visiting us and not feel
ing well, she braced herself hold
ing onto a chair and the kitchen
counter, and offered to dry dishes
for me. My mother, always giving,
always serving! Today, I arise and
call her blessed!

ty for laughter, which was given to
her by her mother. She finds life
full of the absurd and comical and
has a true appreciation for both.
We children have learned to laugh
at ourselves and not take life too
seriously. Mother also has the dis
tinction of making her new grand
son, at just four-months-old, break
into laughter and this with just one
look. Our family gatherings are
punctuated by merriment and fun,
thanks to mother.
My mother. She is a friend, con
fidant, and mentor as well as the
“female parent.” As I think about
her a favorite passage from the
Bible comes to mind. “Her child
ren arise and call her
blessed... Many women do noble
things but you surpass them all.”

though in their 80s, my parents are
a blessing and example to their two
children, nine grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren.

My wife Kitty is the one
responsible for making our house
a home and “holding it all
together,” when my farming
schedule pulls me in 10 different
directions. Kitty is a good
hearted country girl that under
stands late nights in the field
picking up hay, the muddy foot
prints across the kitchen floor, the
manure-caked coveralls, the
bawling of newly weaned claves,
and all the other fun things asso
ciated with farming.

My grandma is the best grandma
in the world because she loves me
so much. She has pretty red hair
just like me. I like to visit her house
because there are so many things to
do. Sometimes she teaches me to
cook. She taught me how to make
the best pancakes in the whole
wide world. I spend every Friday
night at her house. Every Saturday
morning we have either pancakes.
French toast or oatmeal. They are
my three favorite breakfast foods.
My grandma makes them belter
than anyone I know.
I especially like to spend time at
her house during foaling season.
We sleep in our clothes so when
the horse starts to have the baby,
we just grab our shoes. We do so
many things that have to do with
the horses. Every year, they take

when she wins a ribbon in a cart

winning any place.
My grandma also has sheep on
her farm. During the spring, I like
to go to her house to watch the
lambs playing in the fields. My
grandma and I do many things
together. One is planting flowers.
Last year we planted a whole flow

go to her office and help. If I go on

checks! I also get to shred paper to

She also likes clowns. Her birth
