Editor,
I am a dairy farmer, not an oppo
nent of animal agriculture. Many
of the methods of medicine are the
result of using animals first.
However, I have a real concern
in using growth hormone (BST) on
dairy cows.
“All milk contains BST and
there is no lest to tell if the BST in
any milk comes from nature or an
injection.” This is true today.
A few years ago, an animal
medicine salesman was pushing
sulfa drugs for use on cows. It was
printed on the bottle that it was not
to be used on animals (destined)
lor milking or slaughter.
(The salesman) said there was
no way to test for sulfa, but they
learned how, and a lot of farmers
were in trouble.
It is also true that our bodies pro
duce cholesterol. They have
learned that there is a good form of
cholesterol and a bad form.
Is there a bad form of BST no
one knows?
It will not put anyone out of bus
iness to ban die use of BST, but the
scare tactics put out by the Pure
Food Campaign could.
Look at what happened to the
apple growers when the use of Alar
was blown out of proportion. The
Chain Feeder for
Poultry Cage Systems
Farm Forum
apple growers lost millions of
dollars.
The grape growers in South
America were ruined by scare tac
tics. The same thing happened to
mushroom growers, cranberry
growers, and last summer to canta
loupe growers.
I can not sec any reason to set
ourselves up for the same
situation.
If milk were in short supply it
would be different, but with Class I
milk use (which provides the high
est gate price) currently compris
ing less than 50 percent, what
would the percentage be if all milk
production increased 15- to
20-pcrccnl?
What would that do to the price
of milk?

Wilkinson, a retired dairyman,
has been serving as a member of
the board since 1986. He replaces
Donald E. Lanius, who served as
chairman since May 1991.
According to PMMB Secretary
O. Frank DeGarcia, the governor
thanked Lanius, who is continuing
to serve as a member, for his ser
vice as chairman.
