A3O-Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, April 24, 1993 LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) The board of directors of the Lancaster County Conservation District have proclaimed April 25 - May 2 as Soil and Water Ste wardship Week. This year’s theme “Hands on Healing,” emphasizes that the greatest influence on the environ ment comes from individuals doing ordinary thoughtful tasks in their neighborhoods. Churches, local schools, and groups con cerned with conservation in the county will take a look at what individuals can do to make a dif ference with the environment. The Lancaster County Conser vation District has provided materials to more than 30 groups in the county in preparation for the observance. The Pennsylvania State Grange seeks a change m the Milk Marketing Act to permit the use of statistics to help stabil ize prices paid to producers. That was the message delivered Wednesday by State Grange during testimony before the Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Board. Robert Pardoe, a dairy farmer from Northum berland County and chairman of the dairy committee for the Pen nsylvania Slate Grange, told the board the wide variation in Class I prices lead to fluctuat ing profits. “Class 1 sales seem lo vary very little through out the year,” Pardoe said. “Yet the farm price of Class I varied 51.38 per hundred weight m the last 12 months. Under our pre sent pricing system, when the Minncsota- Wisconsin price declines, it pulls the Class 1 price down even though sales remain the same.” Pardoe said Grange policy calls for the use of statistics from the Pennsylvania Agricul tural Statistics Service as a base for quarterly updating of milk prices without holding hear ings as required under the current Milk Mark eting Act. The Grange also seeks the establish ment of a formula simi lar to the one developed by Dr. Stephen Ford of Penn Stale University. “By using these sta tistics for a cost of pro duction plus a return for labor and management, the difference between that figure and the market price could be covered by an over order price,” Pardoe told the board during the meeting held at the Farm Show Complex. “A controlling factor can be achieved with a floor of 40 cents and a District Proclaims Stewardship Week booklets, and other educational materials list 10 ways a person can act to conserve the natural resour ces we have here on our earth. Conservation districts, which work throughout the year on soil and water conservation measures, are encouraging individual responsibility to care for the natur al resources. Nationwide, nearly 3,000 conservation districts work together with the National Associ ation of Conservation Districts to sponsor the annual week-long observance. Mowrer likes to point out that there are millions of people who know how to relate to the needs of nature the farmers who work the soil, the fishermen who follow the streams, and the hunters who value the woods. drcdweight. I believe such a formula could bring some stability to milk pricing for farmers.” HEADQU VENT FARM BS'VM IbnulMuratf ■? . Tapcd 12 ... GALVANIZED 16".. - All Sizes Listed 20".., Can Be Sent UPS 24”..
