REYNOLDSBURG. Ohio Seven research projects have received funding totaling $35,000 from The American Jersey Cattle Club Research Foundation. Each year the AJCC Research Foundation sponsors competitive research grants to fund projects addressing significant issues for die Jersey breed and Jersey milk producers. Since the beginning, the Foundation has provided par tial or full funding to approxi mately 10 worthy projects every year. Jayarao and Arnold M. Saxton, The University of Tennessee. The AJCC Research Founda tion has made research on issues affecting Jerseys a reality. Early projects funded by the Foundation include identifying Limber Legs and Rectovaginal Constriction as genetic abnormalities inherited as autosomal rccessives. Research helped develop practical ways to begin eliminating the abnormaluv from die population. More recent research with long reaching effects includes a project identifying a relationship between type traits and culling in Jersey cows. The conclusion of ihc project “selection for higher production, higher udders, and closer teat placement will improve the eco nomic efficiency of Jersey cattle more than selection on production traits alone” helped The American Jersey Cattle Club introduce a new Production-Type Index (PTI) formula in 1991. The PTI includes a Functional Trail Index (FTI) which combines PTAs for linear traits and weighs them according to their contribu tions to net income, placing more emphasis on trails such as udder depth, teat placement, and rear udder height than stature and strength CONESTOGA VALLEY ENTERPRISES hi-mag||aC LIME] hi ‘ cal f™ 1 " I Cash Discount Savings on Delivery For your convenience calls received Mon.-Sat. until 9:00 pm 1-800-724-3277 Serving PA, MD, Delmarva & NJ BE SURE YOU INSURE wrrvv itq [insurance co | Willi U 9 OUR Farmowners Insurance POLLUTION *±r COVERAGE is now watered down CALL US TODAY A Insuring the Pennsylvania ,W Farmer since 1873 k\ 1-800-452-0867 Q
