Umbrellas: A Brief History
Umbrellas were first used m ancient Mesopotamia as sun
shades and were later adopted by women in ancient
Greece and Rome In the first century a d., Roman
women began oiling their paper sunshades to provide ram
protection, and the umbrella as we know it was born But it
was not until the eighteenth century that umbrellas became
acceptable for men Beginning m 1750, Jonas Hanway always
carried an umbrella around London, ram or shine This was
