Correspondent EDENVILLE (Franklin Co.) “Apples are one of the best foods you can possibly eat,” Heidi Mar tin told the audience shortly be fore she was crowned 1993 Frank lin County Apple Queen. “I’m passionate about the apple indus try. Heidi was crowned March 20 at the Franklin County Horticultural Society’s Fruitgrowers Banquet, held at the Edenville Community Center. Heidi, 17, is the daughter of Randy and Sandy Martin of Chambersburg. She is a senior at Greencastle-Antrim High School, where she is a member of the Na tional Honor Society, and is on the yearbook staff. She was sponsored by her grandfather, Ralph Tracey of Tracey’s Orchard, where she helped in the sales shed since she was a child. “I grew up around apples,” she said. In the interview portion of the contest, emcee Robert Thomas of WKSL radio station asked Heidi, “What is the most important issue facing today’s teens drug and alcohol abuse, staying in school, pregnancy, or AIDS?” Heidi re plied, “AIDS. You can’t just go around and not worry about it. You have to be careful and re sponsible.” The new Queen said that during her reign she wants to work with elementary school children to teach them about apples. She wants to impress upon them how versatile apples are, both for nutri tious eating and for crafts. “Pick ing up an apple is easier than mak ing a batch of cookies,” she added. Also crowned at the pageant were 1993 Apple Princesses Meredith Pratt and Billie Jo Cheshier. Meredith, 16, is the daughter of Jim and Bonnie Pratt of Waynesboro. A junior at Waynesboro High School, she was sponsored by Five Forks Fruit. The daughter of Ken and Mary Cheshier, Waynesboro, Billie Jo is a senior at Waynesboro High School. She is 19, and was spon sored by Fusting Farms Orchard. Judges for the event were San dy Kune, chairperson of the Adams County Apple Queen con test; Wayne Golladay of Adams County: and Linda Ordway of Chambcrsburg. Jennifer Witmer, 1992 Franklin County Apple Queen and Penn sylvania Apple Queen, crowned her successor. “I’ve had a wonder ful year,” she told the audience in her farewell remarks. “It was fun and exciting, and a real learning experience.” She said she educat ed people about the nutritional, economic and environmental as pects of apples. Her favorite activ ity was visiting elementary schools and sharing with the chil dren how important the apple is. She participated in the Green castle Old Home Week parade, Farm Show, and the Franklin County Fair, and worked with lo cal radio stations for Apple Month. The National Apple Museum will open to the general public weekends beginning Saturday, April 24,10 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 25, noon to 5 p.m., other days and times by appointment. To emphasize the importance of freight train service to the apple industry, members of the Waynes boro Miniature Train Builders Association and friends will bring their marvelous train display to the museum for opening weekend. There will be no admission to the Train Show. There will be a charge to tour the display on the second level. Tour guides will be on duty. The gift shop will be open. Jennifer was assisted in her ap ple-promoting activities by 1992 Princesses Tonia Horst and Brandi Tracey Coordinator of the contest, Car ole Tracey of Greencastle, re ported that Jennifer, Tonia, and Brandi handed out 3,000 samples of apple juice and sold 126 gallons of cider in three days of promo tions during Ag Weekend at the Chambersburg Mall.
