Correspondent CHAMBERSBURG franklin Co.) Wearing a satin peach gown, Anna Calhoun of Dayton, Armstrong County, was crowned 1993 Pennsylvania Jersey Queen at the annual meeting of the Penn sylvania Jersey Cattle Club March 26. The daughter of Bill and Betty Calhoun, Anna is a sophomore at Dayton High School, where she is a cheerleader and soccer player. An active member of the Dayton Livestock 4-H Club, the Dayton Area Variety 4-H Club, and the Armstrong County 4-H Council, Anna owns two Jersey cows. She has been recognized as the out standing senior 4-H Girl in Arms trong County and was a Keystone 4-H winner in dairy foods. In her presentation, Anna, 15, told the audience of Jersey breed ers at the Howard Johnson’s Motor Lodge in Chambcrsburg how the Pennsylvania Jersey Club is keeping abreast of challenges. Citing the efficiency of the Jersey cow, she said that the current emphasis on protein content of milk makes the Jersey cow attrac tive to dairymen. Jersey milk has 20 percent more protein and 15 ■ “travel with a purpose' ■ U1 993 TOURS I iemonite/^A J/owrTVaj/^W Travel Wun U:. £xpmrlence Fellowship and Christian Community ♦ Holland (Ml) Tulip Festival May 11 15 ♦ Holme* County Amish and Trumpet in tha Land Oram» June 18 21 ♦ Maritime Provinces of Canada July IS 26 ♦ Europe Anabaptist Tour (in cooperation with Tour Magmalion) Augusts 19 ♦ Mackinac Island (Ml) and Agawa Canyon Ontario September 17 25 ♦ Oiarka Fall Colora October 18 28 One-day tours available - - Please Inquire For Itineraries contact. April 3 1993-B9 percent more calcium than milk from other breeds, Anna said. In the impromptu question por tion of the competition, master of ceremonies Todd Stroup asked Anna, “What would you do if you found out your name had been selected in a drawing and you were getting 50 bred Jersey heif ers and 50 bred Holstein heifers tomorrow?” “I’d take them all,” Anna replied. “It would build my herd up, and the Jerseys would bring more butterfat and protein into my herd.” As Queen, Anna said that she plans to support the Jersey breed and let everybody know that there is a Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Club. Crowned Alternate Pennsylva nia Jersey Queen was Michelle Ryan, daughter of Maryann and Bob Chavey of Linglcstown, Dau phin County. A freshman at Har risburg Area Community College and a member of the Lower Dau phin FFA, Michelle owns three Jerseys, which she shows. In answering the impromptu question, Michelle said that at first she would be upset if she were about to receive 50 bred Jersey heifers and 50 bred Holstein heif ers because she does not live on a farm. She said she would ask questions about how to take care of them, and that she would keep the ones with the best genetic backgrounds. “It would be better than winning the lottery,” she said. 1992 Pennsylvania Jersey Queen Marsha Chess thanked the Jersey breeders for the wonderful year she had as Queen. She had been named fourth runner-up in the National Jersey Queen contest in Louisville, KY during her reign. Judges for the event were Julia Meyers of St. Thomas, chairper son of the Franklin County Dairy Promotion committee; Duane Norman of Fulton, Maryland, research leader of the Animal Improvement Programs Laborat ory, USDA, Bcllsvillc Laborat ory; and Kathy Hartung of Mcr ccrsburg, Jersey breeder.
