tion and safe marketing of live
poultry.
‘The quarantine was
imposed to control pos
sible spread of avian
influenza,” Wolff said,
“and while there is con
tinuing evidence of
exposure to poultry in
Mid-Allantic states, we
believe marketing and
exhibitions can resume
under appropriate
safeguards.
‘To date, out control
efforts have been very
successful, thanks in
large part to the out
standing cooperation
and understanding of
flock owners and the
poultry industry ”
Avain influenza does
not affect human
health even the
strain that is highly
pathogenic and caused
the slaughter of 17 mil
lion birds in Pennsylva
nia, Maryland, New
Jersey and Virginia in
1983 and 1984.
Under the new
amended order in Pen
nsylvania, poultry more
than one week old may
be transported within
the state provided three
conditions are met.
Of those conditions,
the live poultry must
originate from a flock
that is monitored for
avian influenza; the live
poultry must be accom
panied by an approved
health certificate show
ing the birds originate
from a flock that has
been blood tested for
avian influenza; and all
trucks, coops, cages,
creates or other convey
ances used to transport
eggs or poultry must be
cleaned and disinfected
prior to farm pickup.
Special quarantine
restrictions still apply to
poultry from flocks that
are suspected to be
exposed to avian
influenza. Flock sub
jected to the special
quarantine require a per
mit prior to moving
birds.
Slate and federal reg
ulators have conducted
field visits to nearly 500
locations in Pennsylva
nia since the avian
influenza virus was iso
lated in live bird mark
ets in three Northeastern
slates.
To date, testing found
evidence that birds have
been exposed to the vir
us, but no live virus has
been found in any Pcn
nsylvania poultry
flocks.
The ammcnded
order, by law, is to be
published in newspap
ers which effectively
reach the majority of
those affected by the
order. According to the
order, it is to be pub
lished in full in both the
Harrisburg Patriot News
and Lancaster Fanning.
It appears in this issue
of Lancaster Farming in
full on page A-18.
