    Doebler's Corn Champ
By Ted Doebler
I'm Ted Doebler, second from left, with the hands-on managers of
Doebler's. They are, from left, my son Taylor, who heads the hybrid
nursery; my son-in-law Willard Jones, Doebler's sales VP; and my
nephew Bill Camerer, research VP.
It was plain boring at our annual
planning session this winter. So I
suggested we cut the research
budget.
Bill, Willard and Taylor took the
bait. They reminded me a Doebler
early hybrid didn't break the 100
bushel barrier until 1964.
"Compare that to the new
champs," they insisted.
To pick them, the best five yields
of every Doebler hybrid were
totaled for each of three years.
Either 1990-91-92 or 1989-90-91.
Then the champs were selected by
averaging the Top 15 yields.
I was surprised. Really. Five
champs shelled over 200 bushels
last fall and a 97-day champ hit
210.5 bu. in 1991.
Research budget wasn't cut, of
course. Never will be.
