Blizzard Paralyzes State
(Continuad from Pago Al 7)
On Feb. 15, with the strike resol
ved, ADC began shipping again to
Beatrice.
However, the amount of loss
suffered because of blizzard
causcd milk dumping is not yet
known. England said it may be
known and will probably be dis
cussed at the April 14 meeting of
the cooperative’s board of direc
tors at the Ml. Holly plant in
Carlisle.
The blizzard did highlight the
effectiveness of a decision made
several years ago when ADC went
to all contract milk hauling in an
overhead-reduction move. “We
were real pleased with how the
haulers did overall,” England said.
In Lebanon County, Kenneth
Winebark, extension agent, said he
tried to drive to Grantville, and
what normally is a maximum
40-minute drive took him four
hours. He said he continually had
to retrace his tracks when a road
ended up being blocked shut.
However, he and a part-time

day using Sandoe’s tractors with
front end loaders to dig themselves
out and to dig out neighboring far
mers who needed to have a milk
truck get in.
The snow also brought out a
number of sleighs, since roads
were covered with up to several
inches of hard packed snow even
on Tuesday.
Winebark said most of the
dairymen he talked to in the Leba
non Valley managed to get their
milk shipped out and didn’t have to
dump.
Winebark said a number dairy
farmers, such as Nelson Troutman,
not only plowed out their own
lanes, but used their own equip
ment to clear township roads so
milk trucks could get to the farm.
Township crews were busy trying
to keep main arteries open.
He said, the ground is already
saturated and not frozen deeply.
“It’s going to be a while before
people get into the fields. Thing*
are going to be delayed, but if you
get a turnaround in weather, two
weeks’ time can make a lot of
difference.”
