York Livestock Day
Registration Nears
YORK (York Co.) Beef,
sheep and swine producers are en
couraged to attend Penn State Co
operative Extension’s Livestock
Day program planned for Satur
day, April 3rd at the York County
4-H Center at Bair’s Station. Pro
ducers interested in attending the
session are asked to register for
the event by March 26th. The pro
gram features a combination of
group sessions for all livestock
producers, demonstrations/activi
ties, a keynote address and break
out sessions of special interest to
each group of producers. Registra
tion for the event will take place

The morning program will open
at 9:30 a.m. with an update from
Penn State’s Dr. Lowell Wilson
on “Projecting a Positive Image of
the Livestock Industry.” Dr. Wil
son will provide suggestions live
stock producers can follow to deal
with animal welfare/animal rights
concerns. Environmental issues
are increasingly important to live
stock producers and have costs as
sociated with them. Wayne Stein
hour from Meridian Bank, Jim
Sigler from York Farm Credit and
John Eaton from Lebanon Valley
Bank will present a panel discus
sion on environmental costs for ag
loans, new appraisal cost require
ments for loans and cash flow re
quirements for ag loans.
The morning program will con
clude with demonstrations and ac
tivities including: Selecting a Bull
Using Genetic Information, Dr.
Erskine Cash; Using Ultrasound
to Determine Carcass Traits for
Sheep and Swine and to Deter
mine Pregnancy in Sheep, Mike
Cherchuck; and a videotape seg
ment on artificial insemination in
sheep. Computer software used
for livestock record keeping will
also be demonstrated. Software
demonstrated will include the Pig-
Champ® swine records program
by Mark Ebaugh; Computerized
Cow Herd Records by Bob Liv-
