Home to Mother
Not to be confused with Mother’s Day, "Mothering
Sunday” was originally designated for Mother Church tn
England On this mid-Lent Sunday people were encour
aged to return to the church of their baptism. Since this gen
erally meant returning to the hometown of ones’ parents as
well, it came to be a time of family gathering and of taking
gifts to parents, especially mothers It was also the custom to
eat a traditional food on such a feast day. The special food
for Mothering Sunday was furmenty, a porridgelike dish of
wheat boiled in milk and variously flavored with nutmeg or
cinnamon and sugar One very old English recipe also
includes egg yolks, salt, and saffron, with white sugar if
served in the lord’s house but “black” sugar for commoners.
On Mothering Sunday, above all other, every child
should dine with its mother. English Proverb
tf Bread will stay fresh longer if you keep a piece of celery
in the bag.
