week of November. Grain moisture level was higher than normal
at all locations.
Diseases, insects, and other pests
High levels of moisture, cool nights, heavy morning dews, and
foggy mornings in the valley areas were conducive to the devel
opment of leaf diseases in late summer and early fall. Both gray
leaf spot (GLS) and northern leaf spot (NLS) were common in
susceptible lines. Ratings for both were taken and are reported in
Tables 1 and 2.
Tests at the Lancaster location were inoculated with the
pathogens causing northern leaf blight (NLB) and NLS. The rat
ings for NLS are included in the tables. Some stalk rot was noted
at all locations but especially where the incidence of GLS and
com borer were high.
Corn borer infestation was very high in the Lancaster tests
resulting in greater than normal stalk breakage and ear drop. The
other locations did not have such high infestation. Animal dam
age was insignificant at these locations.
Interpretation of results
Least significant differences (LSD) is the tool used to determine
if two average values are actually different statistically. The dif
ference between two hybrids must exceed the LSD value to be
considered significantly different. Example for yield; LSD = 8.1
Bu/A; Hybrid X = 120.0 Bu/A; Hybrid Y = 105.0 Bu/A; 120.0 -
105 = 15.0 Bu/A difference. Since the difference between Hybrid
X and Y (15.0 Bu/A), exceeded the LSD (8.1 Bu/A), hybrid X
was higher yielding due to hybrid superiority and not simply as a
result of uncontrolled environmental factors.
