Day In
New Holland
NEW HOLLAND
(Lancaster Co.) The
Adult Farmer Program
of the Eastern Lancaster
County School District
will conduct an all-day
program for vegetable
growers at the Summit
Valley Elementary
School on Monday,
February 15.
The program will
begin at 9 a.m. with cof
fee, donuts, and visiting
exhibits. General ses
sions will cover topics
such as vegetable insect
identification and con
trol and managing plant
stress.
There will be a series
of concurrent meetings
going on during the day
including topics on
marketing, vegetable
transplant productions,
two bedding plant ses
sions, strawberries,
sweet com, pumpkins,
greenhouse tomatoes,
soil compaction, and
potato grading.
A special session will
presented for growers
thinking about getting
started in vegetable pro
duction. Some valuable
tips will be shared. Pro
ducers may want to
bring more than one
member of the family in
order to attend sessions
going on at the same
time.
Credits toward pesti
cide recertification will
be awarded to those
with private applicator
licenses (3 core plus 2
category). Be sure to
bring your current pri
vate applicator license
with you. A special ses
sion for those needing
category 21 credits for
soil fumigation will be
held in the afternoon.
Presenters on the
program will include
several Penn State spe
cialists: Ray Samulis, a
New Jersey Extension
Agent; representatives
from greenhouse supply
firms; David Lankford,
a Maryland producer;
Boyd Mertz, green
house tomato producer;
and Ed Stoner, PDA
potato inspector.
The Summit Valley
Elementary School is
located on Eastern
School Rd., one and
one-half miles south of
New Holland between
Brimmer and Kinzer
Aves. The meeting will
be in the all-purpose
room on the east side of
the building. Car and
team parking available.
Lunch will be available
at a nominal fee.
All area vegetable
producers are invited.
