Fred E. Zeiner of Morris, president of the New York Beef Cattlemen’s Association (NYBCA), announced final plans for the two day annual meeting to be held January 23 and 24 at the Coming Hilton Inn in Coming, N.Y. For the first time, the event is being held on a Saturday and Sun day, to permit the many members who have off-farm employment an opportunity to participate and attend the educational programs. Zeiner noted that attention to management skills and the bottom line will mark the difference between those who survive in this industry and those who do not With this in mind, the educational program has been planned to cov er such topics as the ideal carcass for today’s beef industry, the ideal feeder calf from the feedlot opera tor’s point of view, selection of the proper bull for today’s indus try, use of alternative feeds.for optimal cow herd performance, ideal cow for the beef industry, health issues for New York beef producers, and finally a panel dis cussion will put it all together. Dr. Charles McPeake, from the University of Georgia, will be the keynote speaker at the educational program. McPeake is the execu tive director of the Beef Improve ment Federation, the organizing body that works with all segments of the cattle industry to standar dize performance selection guide lines for beef cattle. In 1991, changes were made in the New York State bull test program in order to follow the BIF guidelines for central test stations. McPeake will discuss the selection of herd sires for today’s beef industry. The New York Cattlewomen, with Mrs. Eldora Benson of Pots dam presiding, will hold their annual meeting at the Hilton on Saturday, at 11 a.m. Members of the Cattlewomen will host a wine and cheese reception prior to the annual banquet scheduled for Saturday evening. Following the banquet, an auction will be held to benefit the Cattlewomen’s project to provide beef products to homes for abused/baltered women in var ious areas of New York state. They have increased their cover age to forty counties in New York. A small trade show has been organized and will be in operation both days of the meeting. The New York Beef Industry Council, with Jerry Reed, execu tive director in charge, will hold its annual meeting on Saturday at 4 p.m. The NYBCA annual busi ness meeting will be held Sunday at 8:30 a.m. followed by the elec tion of 1993 officers. Slate includes Donald Gray of Spring water for president; Durwood Adams of Ontario, vice president; David Pellett of Canton, secretary: and Charles Boone of Westerlo, treasurer. Annual business meetings of the New York Charolais Associa tion and the New York Simmental Association will be held at 10 Sunday morning. The event will conclude on Sunday with the annual awards luncheon, where the selections for Cattleman of the Year, County Extension Agent of the Year, and the Outstanding Youth will be announced There is a small registration fee.
