A Special Gift
January 27 is the birthday of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson,
English mathematician, logician, and Oxford professor
Although his scholarly works are largely forgotten, he is
well-remembered as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice's
Adventures tn Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
Dodgson hand wrote and illustrated the first manuscript and
presented it as a gift to Alice Liddell, daughter of an Oxford
dean The story was later revised and expanded for pubhca-
Dodgson’s fnendship with Alice and in
■ticular, a trip upriver from Oxford to
lodstow with Alice and her sisters, pro

If you live in a part of the
country where winter’s
storms can mean power
failures, remember to check
your emergency supplies
periodically. Keep some
matches with the candles and
be sure they’re in a place you
can access safely in the dark.
Remember to turn off any
appliances, such as electric
stoves, to avoid accidents
when the power comes on. If
you have advance warning,
fill pots and pans with fresh
water for drinking. Food will
stay frozen up to 48 hours if
you keep the freezer door
shut.
