Lancaster Farming Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) Alan McCauley, of Sunny
Hill Farms, Elizabethtown, took
home his first honors of showing
the supreme champion cow of all
six major dairy breeds represented
in the Large Arena of the state
Farm Show Complexion Tuesday.
The 3-yeaj-old Holstein,
Cameo, is an Astro Jet daughter
out of a Valiant dam, besting not
only the hundreds of other Hols
leins, but the hundreds of other
breed dairy cattle.
McCauley, a veterinarian and
partner in the embro-transfer and
genetic development farm Em-
Tran in Elizabethtown, brought
only two cattle to the show
Cameo - ; and a spring yearling
which took second in its class.
He said the $l,OOO premium
was to go to offset show expenses.
Alan’s son Tom McCauley
showed Cameo in the ring. It was
his win as well. Tom said Cameo
was classified twice and is a
90-point Excellent with an Excel
lent mammary. Her first lactation
yielded 19,000 pounds of milk and
she is currently projected to 27,000
pounds, having freshened in
October.
He said that the show cattle were
not fed any differently than the rest
of the high-producing cow seg
ment of the 75 cows they milk
regularly.
Tom also explained that while
the herd is on test, the farm’s roll
ing herd average is not indicative
of tne production capabilities. That
is so, he said, because about 150
cows arc kept at Em-Tran and are
dry a lot, being used for flushing
for embryos.
Cameo has also competed at the
World Dairy Expo in Madison,
Wis., where she earned a fifth
place in her class. She was also
shown at the Lancaster County
Fair and the Maryland State Fair.
According to Tom, plans for
Cameo currently are that she will
not be flushed for embryos.
The reserve grand champion
Holstein was shown by Craig and
Nikki Woodring, of Chambers
burg. Their 4-year-old cow was
also judged to have the best udder
of the Holstein show.

Sons farm.
Mase and Sharon Love, of
Love-Haven Farms, Scottdale,
actually were going to go together
on the purchase of another heifer,
but the one he wanted was sold for
too much money. He said they
settled on Cameo, which now he
said he’s glad he did.
“There were a couple more I
would have liked to have bought,”
Mase said.
Mase has a small operation with
a registered Brown Swiss herd and
a mixed herd of Holsteins. He sells
milk to Mount Joy cooperative.
Richard and Sharon Love also
have a registered Brown Swiss
herd and a mixed herd of
Holsteins.
