Man began to domesticate ani
mal species 15 to 20 thousand
years ago somewhere in southeast
Asia. The practical definition of
domestication would be the situa
tion where the breeding, care, and
feeding of the animals were under
the continuous control of man.
The first animal to be domesti
cated by man was the dog, which
provided a variety of advantages to
man. Among these were several
roles which we don’t normally
consider. The dog may have been a
source of milk for children, and
were certainly used to keep child
ren warm. They also helped to hunt
