Handsel Monday
According to old Scottish custom, the first Monday of the
new year was the lime to give children and servants a
small gift Literally, something given into the hands ot
someone else, the gift itself was less important than the good
luck it betokened The handsel was popular as a New Year’s
gift Irom the fourteenth century to the nineteenth century,

Winter is a good time for
indoor crafts If vour
project involves using
glue, here are some safety
tips Try using hot vinegar to
remove old glue It will often
soften the glue so it can be
scraped off Carpenter’s glue
and water-based white glue
are the safest to use Many
others contain toxins that are
very harmful to the environ
ment If you must use nonwa
ter-based glues, use a small
fan to blow the fumes out a
partially open window, other
wise they can become highly
concentrated inside your
house in a very short time
