i ne use ot insecticidal soap is a
popular pest control technique for
home gardeners. It’s easy to mix
with water, nontoxic to pets and
humans, has no poisonous residue,
and it even smells clean! Insecti
cidal soap is so popular that many
people substitute dishwashing and
laundry detergents for the com
mercial insecticidal soap product.
This isn’t a good idea according to
Paul Zomer, a scientist for Myco
gen Corporation, Mycogen manu
factures Safer’s Insecticidal Soap.
According to Dr. Zomer, both
types of products are types of fatty
acid salts but there is a wide varie
ty of fatty acids and it’s not noted
on dish or laundry determents
which type of fatty acid is present.
Safer’s Insecticidal Soap, also
knowaas M-Pede, is oleic acid, an
eighteen carbon chain fptty acid.ft
is a natural product that kills

ner warns that some of the laundry
and dish washing products home
gardeners use may act as herbi
cides, too.
You might have noted this
effect on your plants after spray
ing a homemade soap solution.
Some of the plant foliage appears
bleached and spotted.
All fatty acids will kill bugs,
however, the effectiveness of
laundry and dish detergents may
not be as great as insecticidal soap
or as safe foflhe plants. Keep this
in mind when experimenting with
soap sprays,
