Lancaster Society 1
Celebrates 21 Years
Society of Farm Women #1
recently celebrated its 75th
Anniversary with a luncheon at
the Akron Church of the Brethren
attended by 40 members and for
mer members. Farm Women
Societies were organized for fel
lowship and education of women
living on farms or in rural areas
with rural interests. But they have
also contributed much to many
worthy causes. In Lancaster
County there are 29 societies with
776 members. The state of Pen
nsylvania has 3,278 members. The
groups hold monthly meetings in
members’ homes.
Several daughters of original
members of Society #1 are still
active in the group. Mrs. Zahn’s
mother, Barbara Moore, and Mrs.
Clark’s mother, Florence Brubak
er, were the ladies who organized
Society #1 in 1917.
President Julia Zahn presided
over the program of the day.

Speaker for the event was a mem
ber, Fay Garman, who appeared in
an outfit of clothing which
spanned the 75 years; her
mother’s suit, which her mother
had made and worn on her wed
ding trip. She took us on a trip
down memory lane, mentioning
among many other things: the
silver spoons given to each new
baby; the annual Christmas prog
ram given at the former Moravian
Home on Church Square; and the
many years Society #1 boiled
apple butter for Harvest Days at
the Landis Valley Museum. The
meeting ended as all meetings do
by singing the theme song, Bright
en The Comer Where You Are.
