Leader Awards At
4-H Achievement Night
Adult volunteer service to 4-H
was recognized at the recent
Bucks County 4-H Achievement
Night program.
Adult leaders from the Buck
ingham 4-H Club receiving the
award of the Silver Clover for five
years service were Barbara Liv
rone and Tom Connelly, Doyles
town; David Crooke, New Hope;
and William and Beverly Miller,
Holicong.
‘The 4-H program could not
exist without dedicated adult vol
unteers,” said Kay Hastings.

when she presented the awards.
The event, held at the Delaware
Valley College, recognizes out
standing youth achievement and
club community service.

Scissor Wizards 4-H Club
The Scissor Wizards 4-H Club’s first meeting of the
new 4-H Year was at Mrs. Black’s home in Somersville,
NJ. recently.
Election of officiers results were as follows: president-
Beck Black of Somerville; vice piesident-Bobbie Black of
Somersville; secretary-Dawn Russo of Neshanic Station;
treasurer-June Lohner of Whitehouse Station; corres
ponding secretary-Kelly Kreider of Whitehouse Station;
and news reporter-Jessica Acken of Whitehouse.
The club participated at the 4-H Fall Festival on Octob
er 18. Co-chairmen for the club were Jessica Acken and
June Lohner. The group gave a food demonstration on fan
cy cut vegetable garnishes and dip.
4-H Horse Awards Banquet
Recognizes Members
Lebanon County 4-H horse project members were hon
ored for outstanding accomplishments during the year at
the Lebanon County 4-H Horse banquet held recently.
Receiving awards for their achievements in the county
grooming and showmanship contests were David Butler,
Palmyra, 12 years and under; Melissa Letteer, Stevens,
13-IS years olds; and Michelle Beck, Lebanon, 16 years
and older. Grooming and showmanship awards were
sponsored by Brandt’s Mill and Saddlery, Lebanon.
Members were also recognized as class winners at the
county horse roundup. Equitation trophies were spon
sored by Shechy Ford, Lincoln Mercury, Inc. in Lebanon.
Members who participated the district level received gift
certficates donated by Royal Acres Tack Shop, Manheim.
4-H’ers who competed at the State 4-H Horse Show
received gift certificates presented by H & H Tack Shop in
Annville.
Outstanding project book awards were presented to the
following: Marcia Ream, Horses Are Fun; Meredith
Wickel, novice horseman; Sarah Sdeg, tenderfoot horse
man; David Bixler, junior horseman; Melissa Letteer,
senior horseman; Michelle Beck, advanced horseman
ship; Jon Bixler, horse production; Alexis Clelan, compe
titive trail riding; and Nicole Flickinger, leadership.
Nicole Flickinger was honored in the horse category of
the National 4-H Awards Program. The .Barbara Bixler
Memorial Trophy was presented to Tom Flickinger for
high point achievement in the open western pleasure class.
The following adult volunteers were recognized for
their leadership of county 4-H horse clubs; Jeff and Col
leen Krause, Tom and Dawn Flickinger, Florence Letteer,
Cindy Beck, Rebecca Bixler, John Tshudy, Eileen Yorty,
Donna Lansberry, and Trisha Gettler.

Centaurs 4-H Horse Club
At the last meeting of the Centaurs 4-H Horse Club,
annual officer elections were held. The new club officers
for 1992-1993 are as follows: president-Yve Howe of
Whitehouse; vice president-Dyanna Capuano of Pitts
town; secretary-Melissa Hohmann of Pittslown; treasurer-
Valerie Brazdovic of Pitlstown; and reporter-Allison Wil
liges of Pittstown.
The club also planned the first event for the year, a bus

4-H’er Recognized
In a recent competition, Cather
ine Schofield of Morrisville has
been selected as the leading 4-H
member in Pennsylvania in the
The Seeing Eye National Awards
program.
Catherine is the daughter of
Connie and Carlton Schofield and
is a member of the Bucks County
4-H Seeing Eye Puppy Club.
In recognition of this accom
plishment, Catherine will be
attending the five-day National
4-H Congress at the Chicago Hil
ton and Towers in December as a
guest of The Seeing Eye, Inc.
The path to Chicago began over
nine years ago when Schofield
became a 4-H member. This
spring, Schofield was selected to
represent Bucks County in state
competition. Following a review
of her 4-H record, and a personal
interview, she was selected to rep
resent Pennsylvania at the Nation
al 4-H Congress.
1992 Friend Of 4-H Award
The Friend of 4-H Award was
given to Richard A. Bailey, Foun
tainvilie for his service to Bucks
County 4-H at the 4-H Achieve
ment Night program.
Bailey, former Bucks County
extension director, was presented
the award at the Delaware Valley
College Student Center by Kay
Hastings, current county coopera
tive extension director.
Bailey’s involvement in 4-H
began in Berks County as a club
member. Following graduation
from Penn State University in
1955, he began his career in
cooperative extension in Indiana
County and in 1956 he wants
transferred to Bucks County. For
33 years, Dick supported the 4-H
program in Bucks County, first as
a 4-H agricultural agent. When he
became county agent in 1964, he
continued to publicize and champ
ion 4-H at every opportunity.
In 1988, when Bailey retired
from Penn State cooperative
extension, a college scholarship in
his name was established to
reward Bucks County 4-H’ers for
excellence. This year the reci
pients of the'Richard A. Bailey
Scholarships arc Sara Donegan
and Meg Montgomery.

Franklin County 4-H members
brought home ribbons from the
annual Pennsylvania State 4-H
Horse Show held recently at the
Farm Show Complex in
Harrisburg.
Robert Faith of Horse Valley
took a third in the paint fillies of
this year class showing Dixies
War Princess. Beverly Miller of
Greenvillage won two ribbons, a
second in the “Pony Of The Amer
icas” breed 2-year-old fillies class
showing Mschevous Critter.

mas placed 3rd in the quarter
horse weanling filly class showing

All of the youth that repre
sented Franklin County are mem
bers of the Chambersburg 4-H
Horse and Pony Club, which
meets the first Tuesday of the
month at the Franklin County
Cooperative Extension office on
Franklin Farms Lane. They earned
the chance to compete at the state
show by qualifying at their local
and district shows held earlier this

Friends of 4-H
Receives Grant
The Pennsylvania Florists
Association has donated $l,OOO
from its research and education
fund to Pennsylvania Friends of
4-H.
The grant helped pay traveling
expenses for the state champion
Westmoreland County 4-H horti
cultural team, which attended the
National Junior Horticultural
association’s convention on
October 9-12, in Columbus, Ohio.
Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H is
committed to enhancing 4-H prog
ramming and opportunities in the
state. Since it was founded in
1980, the group has raised more
than $700,000. Funds are used to
sponsor 4-H youths at events such
as National 4-H Congress and
Capital Days, to recognize and
train youth leaders, to add or
enhance educational programs,
and to publicize 4-H programs.
