Recently Rosenberger’s Dairies,
based here, began distributing
8-ounce returnable, refillable
school milk bottles in more than
150 southeastern Pennsylvania
schools. The bottles replace
plastic-coated paper milk cartons.
Rosenberger’s Dairies and
another dairy in Danbury, Conn.,
join Saratoga Dairy in upstate
New York in offering the bottles,
made of LEXAN® polycarbonate
resin from GE Plastics. In June
1991, Saratoga Dairy replaced
paperboard cartons in 14 school

Refutable Milk Bottles Introduced In Schools
districts with plastic bottles and
kept over 3 million paperboard
cartons out of Saratoga County’s
three landfills during the school
year. Rosenberger’s has a larger
distribution area, and has the
potential to keep more than 30
million cartons out of the solid
waste system this school year.
“We wanted to get behind a
program that helps the environ
ment,” says Marc Rosenberger,
secretary and treasurer of the com
pany. He adds that the milk bottle
is one way for the students to learn
about ecology, and teaches them
about reuse and recycling.

After use, the bottles are
returned to the dairies’ main plant
in Hatfield, where they are
washed, sterilized, and refilled.
They can be reused about 100
times before being ground up and
recycled for use in non-food
products.
According to Jane Natali, food
service director in the Pennridge
(Pa.) School District, students
have had a positive response to the"
bottle. “We’re selling more milk
than usual,” she says. “The stu
dents say that the milk is colder
and tastes better in the bottles. The
students are drinking more of the
milk because they can see what
they have left in the clear bottles.”
These early comments echo
what elementary school students
in Saratoga said last year. Doug
Soucy, then a 9-year-old Wood
Road Elementary student, said
that by using the bottles, “we’re
helping the environment and not
destroying our planet.” While
Soucy and his classmates agreed
that paperboard cartons might
someday be recyclable, they still
thought the plastic bottles were
better because they can be used so
many times before recycling.

Milk consumption is up at West Rockhlll Elementary
School since Rosenberger's Dairies began replacing
paperboard cartons with returnable, recyclable 8-ounce
plastic milk bottles. According to Pennrldge School Dis
trict Food Service Director Jane Natali, “The students
report that the milk tastes better in the bottles and stays
colder longer.”
