BERLIN (Somerset Co. )
Above 300 persons attended the
Somerset County 4-H Recogni
tion dinner at the community cen
ter to honor county winners in the
4-H National Awards program,
sponsors, and volunteer adult and
junior leaders in 4-H.
The Farm Credit Outstanding
4-H Boy and Girl this year were
Matt Welch and Jodell Rhoads.
Welch’s main project area was in
safety, dairy and beef, while
Rhoads targeted textile science
and fashion revue.
Welch is set to attend the 1992
4-H Club Congress in Chicago
arid participated in the 4-H
exchange trip to Minnesota. Two
scholarships also were given to
Welch, a freshman at the Pennsyl
vania State University. They were
from the Somerset Trust Co. and
The Brotherton Belles and Beaus
4-H.
He also received the Outstand
ing Dairy Club Member Award, a
new memorial to the late Betsy
Will Custer who died last year at
age 25. It was established by the
Somerset Co. Dairy Clubs. Dr.
David and Connie Welch, Berlin,
are his parents.
Rhoads attended the 1991 4-H
Club Congress in Chicago and
participated in the exchange trip to
Minnestoa. Her entry in the Make
It Yourself With Wool contest
took her to National competition
where Rhoads was named second
runner-up, after winning first at
The Farm Credit Outstanding Boy and Girl in Somerset
County, Matthew Welch and Jodell Rhoads were honored
at the Somerset Co. annual 4-H Recognition dinner at
Berlin.

Welch, Rhoades Named Outstanding
Somerset 4-H’ers
the district and state contests in
her division.
Now a student at the ICM
School of Business in Pittsburgh,
the 18-yr-old daughter of Harry
and Virginia Rhoads Berlin, spent
her 4-H years in the Brotherton
Belles and Beaus 4-H Club. Scho
larships for Rhoads were from the
Somerset Co. Lady Shepherds and
First Philson Bank.
Other scholarships went to

firm of Barbcra and Barbera and
The Keystone Lime Co. Inc.;
Michael Yoder, from the Somer
set Co. Homebuilders and Sup
pliers Association and Black’s
Specialty Service; Michael Lynch,
from the Pittsburgh National Bank
and Somerset Co. Beef Producers;
Meredith McElligott, from B.J.
Mauer Ford and the Pittsburgh
National Bank; Jill Barclay, High
land Tank Co. and Brotherton Bel
les and Beaus 4-H Club; Steve
Schmuck, from Snyders of Berlin;
Clint Walker, from Tammy Gless
ner; Christy Wysocki, the Pen
nwest Farm Credit travel award to
the National 4-H Club Congress.

the Congress).
According to officials from the
Somerset County Cooperative
Extension Service the evening’s
contributions exceeded $5,500 for
scholarships, awards, and the
endowment fund whose contribu
tors this year were Hemminger
Homes and the Brotherton Belles
and Beaus 4-H Club.
