Dairy Cattle Judging Team Has Strong Season
UNIVERSITY PARK (Centre
Co.) The Penn State Dairy
Cattle Judging Team recently
completed a strong season of com
petition, placing first in four diffe
rent breeds at various contests.
Team members included Jeffrey
Pirrung, of Ulysses, who is a junior
m Dairy and Animal Science; Tho
mas Smallback, of Cherry Creek,
N.Y., who is a senior in Dairy and
Animal Science; Rebecca Sonncn,
of Richland, who is a senior in
Agricultural Science; and Matth
ew Wanner, of Narvon, who is a
senior in Dairy and Animal Sci
ence. The coach was Dale Olver,
an instructor in the PSU Dairy and
Animal Science Department.
Following extensive workouts
m eastern Pennsylvania and Mary
land, the team judged at the East
ern State Exposition Contest in
Springfield, Mass. The team
placed first in Guernseys, second
in Brown Swiss, third in Ayrshires
and fourth in Holsteins. They fin
ished third overall.
Individually, Smallback was
second in Brown Swiss, Pirrung
was third in Holsteins and sixth
overall, and Wanner was second in
Guernseys.
The team moved on to the Pen
nsylvania All-American Invita
tional Contest in Harrisburg,
where they finished first in Jerseys
and Ayrshires and sixth overall.
Individually, Rebecca Sonnen
placed second in Ayrshires and
third in Jerseys. Tom Smallback
finished fourth high overall and
third in Guernseys.
The final event for the dairy
judging team was the National

capsulizing the cooperative’s
75-year history.
The meeting will resume on
Friday morning, Nov. 20, at 6:45
a.m. with the Young Cooperators
Breakfast Program. The Young
Cooperators have a celebration of
their own as 1992 marks the prog
ram’s 25th anniversary. Special
activities will be the awarding of
the 1992 Agricultural Communi
cator Award and recognition of
Dairy Production Diseases, Economics Seminar
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) An agricultural business
sponsored seminar on dairy pro
duction diseases and economics
has been scheduled for Dec. 10 at
the state Farm Show Complex in
Harrisburg.
The seminar is to feature two
prominent experts in dairy
academia Dr. George Haen
lein, chairman of the animal sci
ence and agricultural biochemistry
department at University of Dela
ware, and a frequent contributor to
Lancaster Farming and other
publications; and Dr. George
Looby, ambulatory clinician at
Tufts University College of Veter
inary Medicine.

At 9 a.m., the delegate session
will begin with action on-the 1992
resolutions. Raymond W. Hackett
of Hairisonville, N.J., chairman of
the Resolutions Committee, will
preside over the session, which
concludes the business portion Of
the meeting.
Special activities have been
planned for those members and
guests not attending the general
sessions. The Ladies Program,
chaired by Thelma Ott of Bangor,
mastitis prevention program.
Haenlein is to discuss trend indi
cators and in what direction the
industry seems to be going.
The seminar is not associated
with any specific group, but is
being offered through the efforts
and support of 17 different agricul
turally related businesses and vet
erinarians in order to benefit the
producer and thus strengthen the
foundation of the industry.
The seminar is scheduled from 9
a.m. to 3 p.m. There is a
$5-per-person fee which is to be
collected at the door and is to help
cover the cost of facilities and
lunch, which is included. The
seminar is open to all dairy farmers
and anyone with an interest in the
dairy industry.
