Responsibility Proves Exciting To This Dairy 4-H’er

MOUNT JOY (Lancaster Co.)
While some 4-H’ers depend so
much on the work of parents and
friends to care for show animals,
Fran Kennel looks at animal
responsibility another way as a
refreshing break from other boring
routines and as simply a joy.
As for her champion animals,
Fran, a senior at Lancaster Menno
nite High School, said she “takes
care of them. I know some kids
don’t They’re on the family farms,
so the dad feeds them and stuff like
that. It’s kind of a break. I don’t
know, to just go out and work for a
while.”
For her devotion to dairy ani
mals, Fran, the 17-year-old
daughter of Marilyn and Larry
Kennel, has been honored as best
owner/breeder in the Holstein
category from the Lancaster Coun
ty 4-H Show.
The award recognizes qualities
of 4-H’ers who believe in what
they are doing and have the per
severance to carry their plans
through to completion, according
to Elizabeth Smith, member of the
Cows ’R Us 4-H Club. The award,
sponsored by Lancaster Farming,
was presented last night at the Lan
caster 4-H Dairy Awards Recogni
tion Night.

years, said her father, a veterina
rian, helped spur her interest in
animal husbandry. “When I was
little, I used to go along with him to
the farms,” she said. “I always
liked the animals, and I took biolo
gy, and it’s just something I enjoy
doing.”
In fact, the only thing prevent
ing her from becoming a veterina
rian like her father is problems
with allergies with animals. They
deter her from fitting animals.
Nevertheless, at one time she
considered becoming a vet, and
instead opted to apply at Elizabeth
town College to study biology.
From there, she will apply through
a special program conducted by
Thomas Jefferson University to
complete a master’s in physical
therapy within five years.
A lot of firsthand “biology”
experience came while working as
a technician for her father during
the summer months, helping to set
up equipment and conduct laborat
ory work, including using the
microscope to search for the
embryos after flush.
This type of work is “really
exciting,” said Fran. The work on
the animals with her family
including brother Reuben, 15, Sar
ah, 12. and Nathan, 9—drew them
closer together.
She said 4-H “teaches a lot of
good responsibility and it keeps us
