GREENCASTLE (Franklin
Co.) When 11-year-old Brad
Divelbiss, who suffers from mild
cerebral palsy and weights only 44
lbs., found out there was no place
for him on the area Little League
teams, he thought perhaps he
could get interested in the cattle
business like his idol Texas Ran
ger Pitcher Nolan Ryan, who is
also a rancher.
Brad told his parents, Steve and
Rolanda, he would like to show a
4-H steer. They never dreamed it
would come to showing the grand
champion at the Franklin County
Roundup.
Eleven months ago Brad bought
the so-called runt of the litter—a
'A Limousin, % Angus crossbred
steer from a local farmer-because
he was tame and small. liven with
Brad’s limitations every day he
would still feed, water, and tell
Nolan he would be a champion
someday like his namesake.
Saturday, Brad paraded his
1,225-pound steer, along with 18

Boyd E. Wolff has announced the
relocation of the USDA Animal
Damage Control (ADC) office to
the Agriculture Building in
Harrisbuig.
The USDA ADC office assists
farmers with complaints and dam
age mitigation relating to animal
destruction of crops.
“Crop losses due to deer and
other animals have increased over
the past decade.” Wolff said. “The
ADC office is accessible to far
mers who sustain animal crop
damage, and it saves the common-

the watchful eye of Judge Ernie
Reeves from Mr. Solan, Va. After
winning champion of the medium
weight, he was named grand
champion of the show. The judge
praised the steer for his thickness
of quarters, square rump, wide
loin, and even finish. Brad also
won novice fitting and was
selected champion fitter of the
show. Hoss’s Steak and Sea
House purchased the animal that
evening for $2.90 a pound.
Crystal Meyers of Greencastle
won the reserve champion with
her 1,270-pound crossbred steer
after being named champion of
the light heavyweight class. Crys
tal also won fitting and showing of
the intermediate division. Her
steer sold for $2.65 a pound to
Detrich’s Elevator of Williamson
that evening. She is the daughter
of Dean and Nancy Meyers.
Winning the lightweight class
was Valerie Bittinger of Cham-
wealth more than $30,000 a year
because we won’t need to open
our own office independently.”
In addition to deer, other exam
ples of wildlife damage include
loss of fruit, vegetables and grains
due to birds, black bear damage to
bee hives and corn, raccoons eat
ing sweet com, and coyotes killing
sheep.

First-year member Spencer
Walk of Chambersburg won the
medium heavyweight class with
his 1,300 pound Angus/Chianina
crossbred steer which sold for $ 1 a
pound to McDowell Insurance.
Spencer also won fitting and
showing in the senior division and
went (Mi to be selected champion
shower.
A 1,440-pound Charlois steer
shown by Darren Statler of Green
castle won the heavyweight class
and was bough by Snider’s Eleva
tor of Lemasters for $1.20 a
pound.
Cheryl Hawbaker of Mercers
burg won first in fitting and show
ing in the junior division, and her
brother Matt won the showing in
the novice division.
