old Brett Bishard. Hoss’s Steak and Sea House restaurants
purchased the winning 1245 lb. Angus with their $3.60 per
pound bid.

Bishard Tops
It paid off for the 4-Her when
his 1245-pound Angus entry
topped the annual steer roundup
October 19 at Weikert’s Buying
Station to take grand champion
honors and the coveted purple
banner.
In the sale that followed.
Bishard’s champion sold for $3.60
per pound to Bill Campbell of
Hoss’s Steak and Sea House.
The champion win was the first
for the third-year 4-H steer raiser,
a sixth grade student at Spring
Grove Middle School. His project
animal was purchased as a calf
from South Branch Farms, York.
Reserve champion was a
1135-pound Maine-Anjou
crossbred exhibited by 15-year
old Shawn Waltimyer, Airville.
Buyer of the reserve winner was
Robert A. Kinsley, Inc., with a bid
of $1.40 per pound.
Champion heavyweight was
exhibited by Kimberly Frantz,

York 4-H Beef Roundup
Seven Valleys. Her 1365-pound
steer sold for 85-cents per pound
to Brown’s Orchard and Farm
Market, Loganville.
Kelly Myers, Thomasville, took
the reserve champion medium
weight honor. Her 1285-pound
winner brought a $1.05 bid from
Wildason Bedliner.
Reserve heavyweight honors
went to Kelly Dutrey, Dallastown,
whose 1345-pound steer sold to
York Agway Farm Center on a
81-cent bid.
Travis Reid, Dallastown, exhi
bited his 1165-pound steer to the
reserve champion lightweight
placing. Buyer of the steer, at
85-cents, was Godfrey Bros.
Meats, York.
A total of 24 market steers were
shown and sold at the annual
roundup. Average price, including
the champion, was $l.OO per
pound. Price without the champ
ion was 87 cents.

LANDISVILLE (Lancaster
Co.) In silage trails conducted
by Solanco Young Farmers,
Funk’s G™ brand 4671 finished
first with a yield of 25.65 tons/
acre at 65 percent moisture. Its dry
matter yield of 17,956 pounds/
acre with a net energy rating of .75
was also tops among the 22 varie
ties tested.
The average yield for the test
plot was 22.35 tons/acre corrected
to 65 percent moisture. Average
dry matter yield per acre was
15,645 pounds.
Brand 4671 also produced
27,255 pounds of milk/acrc

Silage Trials
5,456 pounds more than the near
est competitor. Milk/acrc is calcu
lated using forage analysis and a
conversion factor developed by
the University of Wisconsin. It
assumes that one forage is fed to
dairy cows producing 70 pounds
of milk per day.
The field plot was planted May
7,1992 in 30-inch rows, with each
plot consisting of four rows. Both
plots were harvested on Septem
ber 19 and yield was calculated
from the com weight. A sample
was also taken and sent to Sky
view Laboratory in Jennerstown,
for forage analysis.
