Volunteer Efforts
Fund 4-H Endowment
The efforts of hundreds of 4-H
volunteer leaders across Pennsyl
vania have led to the creation of a
new endowment through Friends
of 4-H in Penn State’s College of
Agricultural Sciences.
The 4-H Volunteer Leader For
um and Education Endowment
will provide funds for training
current and future 4-H volunteer
leaders.
The endowment got its start at
the 1991 Northeast Regional 4-H
Leaders Forum held in Hershey.
This annual event unites volunteer
leaders from 12 states and
Washington, D.C., for training,
discussion and networking
sessions.
Many of the state’s 15,000 adult
and teen 4-H volunteer leaders
pitched in to raise awareness of
the event and to solicit donations
from interested individuals, orga
nizations, and associations.
“It was a real team effort,” said
Dr. Robert Lewis, professor of
agricultural and extension educa
tion and a member of the planning
committee. “We received contri
butions from almost every county
in Pennsylvania, and 200 more
leaders than anticipated attended
the forum.
“The planning committee took
every possible measure to keep
costs down yet still deliver a high
quality program,” Lewis said. “As
a result, we ended up with more
than $24,000 to start the
endowment.
“The members of the planning
committee agreed that the remain
ing money should be used for
future volunteer leader education,
since it was collected for that
purpose.”
Funds from the endowment will
be used to support educational
programs for 4-H volunteer lead
ers, including seminars, scholar
ships, and future forums.
“I’m continually impressed
with the amount of time and effort
people are willing to give,” Lewis
said. “4-H simply couldn’t deliver
what it does without the efforts of
its volunteer leaders.”
